JP Morgan Chase Institute - Research Associate

As a Research Associate, within the JPMorgan Chase Institute, you will conduct economic research on small businesses and local economic development using proprietary big data from JPMorgan Chase. 

Job Responsibilities:

Collaborate with the Institute’s research lead, research director, academic fellows, and internal thought leaders to develop cutting-edge analyses.  Utilize large datasets of de-identified banking records, either independently or in conjunction with publicly available data, to contribute to both public and academic discourse. Work with extensive datasets using big data programming languages on a public cloud platform, producing empirical insights and impactful visual analytics. Acquire and apply topic-specific knowledge in areas such as small business economics and urban economics. Communicate analytical insights and actively participate in the research process. Conduct literature reviews, and edit and draft reports and other research materials.

Required Qualifications, Capabilities, and Skills:

Bachelor’s degree in economics, public policy, statistics, or a related field. Experience working with large datasets (e.g., greater than 1,000,000 observations). Strong programming experience in languages commonly used in empirical research (e.g., Python, Scala, SQL, R, SAS, Stata, C++) Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with experience conveying complex ideas to non-technical audiences. A strong sense of intellectual curiosity and a desire to be directly involved in the public-oriented mission of the Institute Commitment to intellectual rigor and adherence to compliance and data privacy controls. An entrepreneurial and proactive mindset, coupled with strong communication skills, is essential for success in this role.

Preferred Qualifications, Capabilities, and Skills:

Preference for Python and/or SQL. Experience with big data computing on a public cloud platform (e.g., Spark, AWS) is advantageous. Experience with technical collaboration tools (e.g., Git, Jira) is beneficial. Prior experience working with financial services or other administrative datasets is a plus. Experience with quantitative research or longitudinal studies is desirable.
