JUNIOR SCIENTIST (Entry)

(CAPE TOWN)

Duration: Two-Year Contract

The SAMRC’s Environment and Health Research Unit requires a junior scientist to support research efforts aimed at understanding and addressing the growing threat of antimicrobial resistance in the environment, particularly through wastewater surveillance. The junior scientist will work under the guidance of scientists and technologists to assist with laboratory work, contribute to the preparation of reports and peer-reviewed publications, and perform desktop reviews to support the project’s objectives. This position is ideal for an early-career researcher looking to expand their experience in a multidisciplinary research environment. An interest in antimicrobial resistant (AMR) related research as well as environmental health is preferred.

Responsibilities:

• Conduct literature reviews as well as format manuscripts, reports and presentations

• Field work including environmental sample collection

• Adherence to study protocols, SOPs and project timelines

• Assist with administrative tasks including supply chain management

• Participate in project meetings, workshops, and conferences to present research findings.

Core Requirements:

• 4-year tertiary qualification in environmental science, biological sciences, human geography or related field

• 1 year research experience

• Experience with collecting environmental sampling

• 1 years working experience within a research institute or related environment

• 1 years working as a project coordinator in a research environment

• Code 08 manual driver’s license

Advantageous:

• Postgraduate degree in Environmental Science or similar

• 1-2 years working as a project coordinator in an Environmental research environment or related field

A salary in the region of R 345 485.00 per annum, cost-to-company will be negotiated in accordance with qualifications and experience.
