Role Overview:

We are seeking a dedicated Junior Transportation Modeler to join our McLean, Virginia group. You will engage in dynamic projects involving Operations, Safety, and Freight, and in the rapidly advancing fields of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), Cooperative Driving Automation (CDA), Digital Twin, V2X, and Connected Vehicle (CV) technologies.

Anticipated pay range for this position: $75,000-$95,000

Key Responsibilities:Develop, implement, and maintain multi-resolution traffic simulation models, including microscopic, mesoscopic, and macroscopic levels.Enhance and customize traffic simulation tools (e.g., VISSIM, SUMO, Aimsun, Transmodeler) by implementing algorithms via programming languages such as Python or C++.Analyze simulation results, generating detailed reports and presentations for stakeholders, including FHWA leadership and industry partners.Stay updated on advancements in traffic simulation tools and methodologies, contributing to best practices and innovative solutions.Create technical documentation, training materials, and outreach content for technical audiences and stakeholders.Apply data mining techniques to transportation datasets for simulation studies and analysis.Collaborate with systems engineering teams to align simulation models with project requirements.Support technical proposal development and author white papers, demonstrating thought leadership in transportation modeling.Assist with identifying research opportunities, growth strategies, and customer communications for upcoming projects.Perform software development and integration tasks to support intelligent transportation systems programs.Required Qualifications:Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Transportation Engineering, or a related field.At least 1 year of experience with at least one microscopic traffic simulation tool (e.g., VISSIM, SUMO, Aimsun, or Transmodeler) in a professional or academic setting.Expertise in developing and calibrating simulation models and implementing algorithms using programming (e.g., Python or C++).Knowledge of connected and automated vehicle (CAV) technologies and their applications in transportation research.Strong writing and communication skills to effectively convey technical concepts to diverse audiences.Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance (requires three years of U.S. residency).Preferred Qualifications:Master’s or Ph.D. in Civil Engineering, Transportation Engineering, or a related field.Experience with mesoscopic and macroscopic simulation tools (e.g., TransCAD, VISUM).Proficiency with tools like MATLAB, R, or Python libraries (e.g., Pandas, NumPy) for data analysis and visualization.Familiarity with GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS or QGIS) for mapping and geospatial analysis related to transportation networks.Understanding optimization algorithms and their application in traffic flow or signal timing.Experience with cloud-based platforms for running large-scale simulations (e.g., AWS, Azure).Knowledge of traffic modeling frameworks, including OpenDRIVE and OpenSCENARIO for scenario generation.Familiarity with V2X communication protocols and tools (e.g., NS-3, OMNET++).Experience integrating traffic simulation tools with other platforms (e.g., CARLA).Familiarity with Agile methodologies and practices.Proficiency with version control systems like Git for collaborative code development.Team Dynamics:Strong team collaboration skills with a focus on constructive feedback and engagement.Clear and effective communication skills, both verbal and written.Commitment to schedules with a strong work ethic.Receptive to professional growth and continuous learning opportunities.High-quality standards and enthusiasm for transportation simulation and research.
