Serco is looking for a Junior Welder to join a dynamic team, supporting our C5ISR system installations located in Newport News, VA.  Bring your expertise and collaborative skills to make an impact toward our military defense and safety of our Sailors. 

 

Serco supports our US Naval Ships with successful and safe work for our Navy customer by providing cabling, equipment, and C5ISR system installations for our Navy and the Military.  You will join a active team to perform general manual labor to support this critical mission.

 

You will be part of a team that works closely with the customer and other Serco team members to deliver high technology performed on-board U.S. Naval Ships and military installations.  

 

In this role, you will:

Interpret specifications, drawings, blueprints, shop job orders and, process sheets.Use a variety of ARC and gas welding equipment to fabricate or repair products such as foundations, cable collars, cable/pipe/vent hangers, cable tubes penetrations, studs, etc.Perform related task such as thermal cutting (PLASMA or TORCH) and grinding.Have knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field.Assign work to qualified personnel.Train new shop personnel on machinery, tools and test equipment required for quality construction of products.Work on-board U.S. Naval Ships and military installations in an area that is somewhat uncomfortable due to drafts, noise, temperature variation and the like and with equipment where carelessness would probably result in minor cuts, bruises, muscle strains, serious injury, or death. Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you will have:

A High School Diploma/GEDThe ability to obtain and maintain a Secret ClearanceThis position supports a U.S. Government Contract whose terms require Serco to staff it only with U.S. Citizens, be able to obtain gain access to shipyards (NAVSTA & DBIDS), undergo a background investigation and pass a drug screeningSuccessfully qualify in the following Serco Welding Procedures within 30 calendar days of starting date: Serco-001 (GMAW, Aluminum – 4 position)Serco-002 (SMAW, HY100-4 position)Serco-003 (GMAW, Aluminum – 4 position)Serco-007 (SMAW, C/S to S/S – 4 position)Serco-012 (SMAW, S/S to S/S – 4 position)The ability to pass a steel SMAW & FCAWThe ability to complete a 248 Training2 years of Shipyard experience 2 years of combined experience in the areas below:Read drawings (At the Apprentice level)Repair base materialAdvanced understanding & comprehension of NAVSEA Standard ItemsGrind/plasma cut/fit/tack weldThe Ability to work in efficient tandem with SF/PF/Welder teaming structureSafety: Able to Identify safety concerns in immediate work environmentHave your own tools of the trade and able to pass pre-certification company weld testFamiliarity with NAVSEA, standard concepts, practices, and procedures within the field of electrical repair, fabrication, and installationGet respirator qualified and wear proper PPE throughout their work shiftBe able to work in high heat spaces, climb shipyard dry dock stairs/ladders, work in kneeling position for layout of cable runs under false decking, lift 50 pounds with 80% of work requiring carrying, pushing, and/or pulling up to 40 pounds for majority of shift while being in a standing, crouching, or walking positionHave attention to safety (which is critical)Be willing to travel up to 10% to various work sitesBe willing to work in Newport News, VA
