Juvenile Diversion Coordinator

JOB TITLE: Juvenile Diversion Coordinator

REPORTS TO: Juvenile Alternative Resolution Program Director and Chief of Juvenile Unit

COMPENSATION: starting annual salary of $51,000; commensurate with experience

POSITION PROFILE:

The Juvenile Unit of the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office handles all juveniles criminally charged in Boston, Chelsea, Winthrop, and Revere. Over sixty percent of all juveniles charged in Suffolk County are diverted away from the justice system. The Juvenile Alternative Resolution (JAR) program works with the highest risk and highest need juveniles in this population, who require the most support. The program uses a multi-system approach, utilizing community organizations, to assist SCDAO’s diversion efforts by meeting the needs of these youth in the community. The Coordinator will provide comprehensive case management of JAR Diversion participants, including conducting an initial intake and YLS/CMI 2.0 risk/needs assessment, creating an individualized service plan, referring the juvenile to appropriate community based partners for services to address needs, implementing and monitoring the service plan, and conducting reassessments and regular evaluation of the effectiveness of the service plan on the juvenile. The Coordinator will typically work with a youth and their family for 6-12 months.

The Coordinator will assist in developing and strengthening partnerships with community organizations and should have experience with youth-serving programs in Suffolk County as well as experience working with a diverse population of at-risk youth.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Attend court as needed to meet with the juvenile, his or her family, and attorney.Work and communicate effectively with law enforcement, court personnel, Department of Children and Families (DCF), school staff, and defense attorneys.Review police reports, school records, criminal records, and any other documents relevant to assessing and managing the juvenile’s needs.Schedule and attend appointments with the juvenile and family to conduct intake, assessment and screening.Follow-up with juvenile and their family on a consistent and ongoing basis until diversionary period is complete.Develop individualized diversion plans and refer youth and family to appropriate community resources.Advocate with collateral contacts to provide quality case management and integrated careWork with Victim Witness Advocates to ensure that any victims have a voice during all phases of the diversion process.Maintaining a high volume of documentation for each caseload, accurately, detailed and timely.Attend meetings as they relate to youth services, monitoring, and compliance.Identify, assess, select, develop and maintain referral partnership relationships with local service resource agencies that effectively assist JAR participants to achieve their opportunities and objectives in life.Attend various community meetings.Develop and maintain partnerships with community partners and youth serving organizations.Assist in the collecting and compiling of statistics and the ongoing evaluation of JAR and the work of the Juvenile Unit.

OTHER DUTIES:

Attend required training and other trainings relevant to office functions.Become familiar with and follow the provisions of the Office Personnel Policies, particularly with regard to confidentiality, sexual harassment, drug-free workplace and the usage of information technology resources.Exercise respectful and professional behavior and communication with the public, judicial and law enforcement personnel, and office staff.Complete work assignments in a timely, accurate, and efficient manner.Perform other duties as assigned.Able to run and attend meetings and court hearings virtually.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: N/A

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:Be able to stand, sit, and walk for extended periods of time.

TRAVEL: Travel within Suffolk County courts, law enforcement offices, and community facilities is expected and may extend to travel outside of Suffolk County on a case-by-case basis.
