Job Description
The Pathologist Tissue Technician will perform various duties related to autopsy, surgical pathology, intraoperative consultations, bone marrow aspirations, and other pathology-related tasks. The technician will handle, prepare, and process tissue samples, ensuring accurate and efficient results for the pathologist. The role involves working in a hospital laboratory environment, maintaining equipment, and managing specimen logistics.
Responsibilities
+ Prepare body for autopsy, set up for autopsy, and clean after autopsy.
+ Dictate gross description and cassette summary for autopsies.
+ Dictate clinical summary for autopsies.
+ Dissect and display organs for the pathologist, taking sections of tissue and submitting them for processing.
+ Dissect small specimens and perform gross examination and description.
+ Examine tissue for type, size, color, and status, and document findings per grossing protocol.
+ Prepare tissue for intraoperative consultations, including sectioning for frozen sections and preparing slides.
+ Assist pathologist and clinician in bone marrow aspiration and biopsy, including preparation and submission of smears.
+ Process pathology samples, ensuring patient identification and resolving discrepancies.
+ Track specimens and prepare them for transportation.
+ Maintain the morgue and cutting room, including cleaning, changing solutions, and disposing of tissue and chemical waste.
+ Manage overdue reports, file tissue slides and cards, troubleshoot equipment, and release slides and reports as per policies.
+ Communicate with patients, clinicians, and hospital staff, prepare data and reports, and maintain departmental supply inventories.

Additional Skills & Qualifications
+ An earned associate degree in laboratory science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution.
+ Equivalent education/training with at least 60 semester hours from an accredited institution, including specific coursework in medical laboratory technology or science courses.
+ Completion of a clinical laboratory training program approved by ABHES, NAACLA, or other recognized organizations, or at least 3 months of documented laboratory training in each specialty of high complexity testing.
+ 3 months of pathology experience.
Work Environment
The Tissue Technician will work in a hospital laboratory environment, handling a variety of tasks related to pathology. The role requires maintaining equipment and ensuring a clean and organized workspace. The technician will be part of a collaborative team in a large hospital system, contributing to a positive and efficient work environment.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $28.00/hr.
