Kitchen Assistant New York, NY (http://maps.google.com/maps?q=New+York+NY+USA+10018) • Nutrition Job Type Full-time Description TheKitchen Assistantwill assist the Cook and Cook assistant in all aspects of meal preparation in a high-volume production kitchen for lunch service. This role will maintain a high standard of cleanliness, organization, food quality, and manage the day-to-day back of house and service operations including dishwashing and pantry services. This schedule is subject to change in accordance with holiday scheduling and agency activities/events. Essential Job Functions The following duties are mandatory requirements of the job: + Assists Cook and Cook assistant in all aspects of daily food preparation and storage in a large production kitchen service in accordance with the New York State Department of Health and the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. + Performs dish washing for meal service and maintains general cleanliness in food preparation areas. + Ensures all menu items are produced using approved standardized recipes and are created with high-quality ingredients. + Follow safe food handling guidelines and all applicable state and local food safety regulations. + Maintain a safe work environment and ensure food safety by training and actively managing staff and volunteers to the regulations and standards in food handling, food storage, equipment operation, kitchen cleanliness, and personal hygiene. + Ensure accurate labeling of all items produced in the kitchen, including sub-ingredients, allergens, product dating, etc., seeking guidance or clarification as needed Head Chef. + Identify and inform Cook of any ongoing food production issues. + Provides an outstanding environment and experience for all volunteers. + Completes any other tasks as assigned by Cook, Director of Nutrition and Meals services. Other Responsibilities The following duties are to be performed as assigned by the supervisor: + Ensure that all kitchen equipment is cleaned and sanitized. + Assist with inventory. + Attend relevant training sessions as needed. + Demonstrate integrity and strive for excellence. + Create a welcoming and professional environment for all volunteers and embrace the value of volunteerism at GMHC. + Assist in special projects and perform other related duties as assigned by the Director of Nutrition and Meals. Requirements Education and Certification + High School Diploma or equivalent + ServSafe certified. Special Skills and Knowledge In addition to the above-listed job responsibilities and educational requirements, the ideal candidate for this position possesses most or all the following: + Basic computer skills required, including Microsoft Office. + Must speak and understand basic English. Fluency in Spanish is preferred. + Must be able to lift 40+lbs and must be able to stand for long periods of time. + Ability to follow menu plans, large quantity recipes and schedules. + Minimum of two years of experience with food preparation with a food-service institution; understanding of food safety and sanitation; knowledge of soups and sauces. Salary Description $20 / Hour
