You will be performing husbandry duties such as cage changes, daily health observations, technical procedures, and maintenance and monitoring of aquatic systems; cleaning and sanitizing caging, accessory equipment and work areas; reporting abnormalities to Director and/or Veterinarian; monitor and maintain inventory and stock for assigned area; perform accurate written and computerized data collection. Laboratory animal technicians enjoy the ability to work with animals in an academic setting and are strongly relied upon for their unique skills in monitoring and assessing animal health and wellbeing. Duties and Responsibilities Laboratory Animal Technician I Assess the health of multiple animal species daily; feed, water and clean animal housing areas, complete cage changes at required intervals. Understand and follow appropriate SOPs, policies and quality assurance guidelines. Prepare, maintain and submit required records, charts, logs, and inventories as requested. Complete computerized animal census, health reports, and breeding documentation. Clean and sanitize animal caging, accessory equipment, and facilities; routine maintenance of equipment. Operation of rack washers, autoclaves, bedding stations, biosafety cabinets and water purification systems. Incumbent will attend and participate in routine staff meetings, training to ensure SOP compliance and the use of personal protective equipment; comply with requirements for use of employer provided equipment. Dispose of waste from the facility following appropriate Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
Laboratory Animal Technician II All Laboratory Animal Technician I responsibilities. Maintain breeding colonies of research animals following established protocols and procedures. Maintain records on animal health and lineage, experimental procedures, environmental perimeters of facility and sanitation equipment. Perform technical animal procedures as required under the direction of the veterinarian or Director. Performs standard husbandry and housekeeping duties. Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills Laboratory Animal Technician I Must have a high school diploma or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience. Experience with basic computer operations (email, Word, Excel, SharePoint) Laboratory Animal Technician II Two years’ experience in the field of laboratory or research animal care or as a veterinary technician, or a college degree in a related field (i.e. biology, zoology, animal science) or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience. Certification as an Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician with the American Association of Laboratory Animal Science or ability to obtain certification within one year of hire. Ability to follow established protocols and procedures while working in the laboratory environment. Knowledge of sanitation and sterilization techniques. Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills Laboratory Animal Technician I Willingness to learn. Experience working with animals. Understanding of cleaning and sanitation. AALAS ALAT certification. Laboratory Animal Technician II Same qualifications as the Laboratory Animal Technician I. Knowledge of barrier and bio-containment housing practices and procedures for animals. Ability to perform technical procedures, such as withdraw blood and administer injections, for common laboratory animals. The Successful Candidate Will Ability to follow verbal and written directions, procedures, policies and instructions. Ability to pay attention to details and complete accurate record keeping. Must have good time management skills and the ability to prioritize tasks. The ability to work independently and as part of a team, communicate effectively with people both internal and external to the department, successfully interact and cooperate with people of all backgrounds, including researchers, faculty, and students; and accurately follow instructions, procedures and regulations. Position Special Requirements/Additional Information This position will require weekend work, and holiday work on a rotational basis. Regular ARC business hours cover a 7 day week and shifts vary from 40 hours in a single work week, or up to 50 hours/week when assigned to work a holiday/weekend. Flex time or Comp time may be accrued for hours exceeding 40 hours in a week. Work Schedule may be flexible. General hours are 8:00am-5:00pm with two consecutive days off, and your days off can be negotiated once training is complete.
