Job Overview: Clinical laboratory personnel, as members of the health care delivery team, are responsible for assuring reliable and accurate laboratory test results which contribute to the diagnosis, treatment, prognosis, and prevention of physiological and pathological conditions in humans. Quality clinical laboratory testing is evidenced by: performing the correct examination on the right person, at the right time, producing accurate test results, with the best outcome, in the most cost-effective manner.

Qualifications:
Required:

High School diploma or equivalent is required. Post high school training is necessary. It should be similar in length and scope to Medical Assistant certification.

Essential Functions:

Checks that the consent forms are in order

The chart is complete and available for the autopsy pathologist.

Prepares and cleans the body for the pathologist.

Takes and records body measurements accurately.

Maintains records including photography of the autopsy performance.

Assists the pathologists & residents with the autopsy procedure.

Closes the body so that there are no complaints from any funeral home.

Other miscellaneous tasks associated with autopsy performance.

Carries the beeper and assists with the Department of Pathology s Regional Autopsy Service.

Takes responsibility for fetal autopsy paperwork and works with the residents and pathologists so that the procedure is performed in a timely manner.

Takes responsibility for fetal demise paperwork when the family has requested that the Hospital dispose of the remains.

Fetal tissue disposal is carried out on a quarterly basis with the contracted funeral home.

Maintains the autopsy suite, cold room, office, storage areas and the tissue room in a neat, clean and orderly manner.

Disinfects and cleans the autopsy suite immediately following an autopsy completion.

Removes and disposes of biohazard waste according to policy and regulations.

Inventories all supplies and notifies the Supervisor of required supplies, instrumentation and other equipment.

Ensures formalin supplies are adequate both in the autopsy suite and the tissue room.

Maintains appropriate supplies of other fixatives.

Maintains film supplies.

Communication, cooperation, and assistance are given promptly in a clear, courteous manner to co-workers, hospital staff, patients, physicians, and other hospital personnel according to the following criteria:

Demonstrates a hospitable, congenial and helpful attitude.

Utilizes good interpersonal relation skills, which include maintaining good working relations with fellow employees and maintains good rapport with all hospital personnel.

Demonstrates cooperation and flexibility on the job as evidenced by the following key performance indicators:

Utilizes lulls (15 min or more between assignments) in the workload to assist other department personnel in completing their assignments where feasible.

Will provide coverage during lunch and breaks regardless of station assignment.

Adheres to the prescribed time periods for department lunch and breaks four out of five times.

Accepts and performs in a timely and correct manner other duties and tasks as assigned.

Has demonstrated effort in working towards goals established during the previous performance evaluation.

Retains and expands knowledge through continuing education: Attends in-house or outside seminars; reads and reports on articles or videos. Performs all annual mandatory on-line testing.

Utilizes proper techniques and abides by safety regulations according to the following indicators:

Closely adheres to Universal Precautions, the Laboratory Chemical Hygiene Plan, The Laboratory Safety Policy, Hazcom protocols and the OSHA Blood-borne Pathogen Exposure Control Plan.

Responsible for taking the used formalin, xylene and alcohols and the DAB solutions from the Ventana Stainer down to the Loading Dock and putting the waste into the appropriate waste container for pick-up. The drums should be labeled appropriately and dated when the first disposal occurs.

Spills are cleaned up immediately in accordance with the CHP and MSDS instructions. The Supervisor is notified.

All tanks are secured appropriately.
