St. Charles also offers services in general surgery, colon/rectal surgery, bariatric surgery, neurosurgery, ENT, pediatrics, diagnostic imaging, emergency medicine, epilepsy, stroke care, Female Pelvic Floor Disorders Center, and a nationally accredited Sleep Disorders Center Job Details Responsible for obtaining blood specimens from all age groups of patients and is thoroughly familiar with specimen requirements and specimen workflow throughout the laboratory (i.e., specimen collection, receipt, distribution, etc.). Responsibilities: Treat all patients in a professional, courteous and respectful manner, adhering to age-specific protocols. Ensures correct patient/specimen identification throughout the entire specimen collection and testing process as per protocol. Demonstrates ability to collect and label specimens with the MobiLab system or during computer downtime as per protocol. Demonstrates knowledge of collection priorities and locations. Demonstrates knowledge of collection devices, specimen containers and “order of draw”. Demonstrates knowledge of specimen requirements, including those requiring special processing. Demonstrates knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the venipuncture and/or capillary puncture site. Demonstrates ability to perform both adult and pediatric venipunctures. Demonstrates ability to perform capillary punctures. Demonstrates ability to perform blood culture collection. Demonstrates ability to use laboratory/phlebotomy equipment to safely and competently obtain blood specimens from all age groups of patients. Demonstrates knowledge of special specimen handling protocols (i.e., Code Orange, Rapid Response, Code Sepsis, STAT, etc.). Demonstrates knowledge of laboratory information system. Interprets orders for specialized procedures and possesses knowledge of specimen requirements for these tests. Assists immediate supervisors in complying with all New York State Department of Health, Joint Commission and Federal regulations. Monitors supply inventory, takes action to unpack and replenish supplies in all necessary areas (i.e., phlebotomy carts, outpatient drawing room, storeroom, send out area, etc.) and notifies immediate supervisor when supplies need to be ordered. Maintains a clean, safe and organized work environment, following daily disinfecting procedures. Adheres to safety protocols, follows universal precautions, infection prevention and control measures and utilizes appropriate personal protective equipment. Follows proper procedure for disposal of reagents, specimens and sharps. Demonstrates a broad knowledge of all departments in the laboratory and how they relate to the laboratory as a whole. Demonstrates initiative with ability to identify, analyze and solve work-related problems (i.e., patient identification issues, unsuccessful phlebotomy attempts, specimen collection issues, pending/unreceived log issues, test order clarification, etc.) consulting with supervisors, if necessary. Resolves pending logs and provides effective hand-off communication. Requirements: Education: High school diploma or equivalent required. Certificate from an approved phlebotomy training program or a medical laboratory assistant program (which includes phlebotomy) preferred. Skills, Knowledge or Abilities: Must possess knowledge/ability to use laboratory/phlebotomy equipment to safely and competently obtain blood specimens from all age groups of patients. Basic computer skills essential. Salary Range USD $20.64 - USD $30.96 /Hr. This range serves as a good faith estimate and actual pay will encompass a number of factors, including a candidate’s qualifications, skills, competencies and experience. The salary range or rate listed does not include any bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation that may be applicable to this job and it does not include the value of benefits.
