Lab Group Lead

This role supports the Core Lab.

Under the general supervision of the assigned Section Manager, the Group Leader is responsible for the direction of Laboratory personnel engaged in the conduct of routine and/or specialized tests and analyses. Provides a general level of technical and managerial direction to (a) ensure the accuracy and efficiency of services provided by the assigned group, (b) resolve day-to-day problems within the laboratory, (c) and ensure or conduct the necessary on-the-job and formal training of subordinates. Acts as the section manager in the absence of one.

Also participates in the performance of laboratory procedures that fall within the range of the group.  Provides quality patient care considering age specific, developmental, and cultural needs. Demonstrates unit/area-designated competencies.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Education

Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college, or university in Medical Technology, Histotechnology or equivalent work experience, or related science required, depending on section(s) to which assigned.

Medical Technologist (MT)/Histotechnologist (HT) – ASCP, or NCLS certification preferred.

Experience

Minimum of two (2) to four (4) years of progressively more responsible experience as a Medical, or Histo Technologist.

Skills/Knowledge

Ability to work independently. 

A high level of organization is expected along with attention to detail and follow-thru.

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; ability to interact with a variety of laboratory personnel, patients and other medical professionals.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1.      Coordinates and reviews the work of laboratory personnel in assigned group to ensure that all tests and procedures are performed properly in accordance with prescribed instructions and that all results are valid and accurate.

2.      Oversees the inventory system so that an adequate level of supplies and materials necessary to complete work of assigned group is available.

3.      Provides advice and guidance to subordinates on technical and procedural problems which arise in the conduct of tests or procedures; functions as interdepartmental liaison for investigation and resolution of problems.

4.      Orients, trains and evaluates technical and non-technical personnel assigned to the group to ensure proper performance of their duties, and adherence to departmental and hospital policies and procedures.

5.      Maintains and evaluates the quality control and preventative maintenance programs and records in assigned group; trouble-shoots and repairs equipment when necessary.

6.      Assists the Section Chief in preparation and maintenance of laboratory quality control and procedure manuals.

7.      Involved with the Section Manager in the recommendation and participation for the selection, transfer, promotion and discharge of subordinates.

8.      Supports Laboratory’s marketing efforts, including emphasis on service, development of supporting materials and/or marketable test methodologies, and direct market contacts, as required.

9.      Participates in the evaluation and development of new laboratory techniques, maintaining proper records.

10.   Recommends changes in methods, equipment, personnel and the like to improve the functioning of the assigned group.

11.   Monitors test utilization patterns for inpatients and outpatients within area of responsibility, with development of methods to positively impact these patterns. Assists the Section Manager in the preparation and evaluation of variance reports and workload data.

12.   Monitors compliance with the Laboratory Safety Program in assigned area.

13.   Participates actively in the Laboratory’s educational activities, including both intra- and interdepartmental in-service programs. Remains current in areas of responsibility through seminar attendance and self-study.

14.   Responsible for work assignment/scheduling and payroll verification of hours worked for respective cost center(s).

15.   In addition to the above-mentioned managerial and administrative duties, the Group Leader performs the work of a full-time medical technologist.

16.   Provides quality patient care by considering the age specific, developmental and cultural needs through competent clinical practice. Demonstrates unit/area competencies.

17.   Assists in training of technologists, technicians, lab assistants, clerical staff and others.
