The Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Cancer Biology at the University of Virginia School of Medicine, is seeking a Laboratory Specialist to work in the Kendall Lab. The Lab Specialist will be responsible for providing direct research support for multiple bacterial pathogenesis/infectious diseases research projects in the Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Cancer Biology.
We require a very well-organized and highly motivated individual who seeks to contribute substantially to the overall research mission of the Kendall Lab. The successful candidate must be able to work both independently and collaboratively with other lab members. The ideal candidate will be technically proficient and possess good critical, analytical, and communication skills. Interest in and willingness to learn new techniques are essential job components. The successful candidate will also be responsible for laboratory organization and maintenance. This includes training of other personnel, maintaining and handling animals and conducting experiments, maintaining supplies and reagents, and maintaining equipment.
Duties will include:
Conduct tests and experiments according to experimental lab protocols.
Preparation of reagents.
Maintain inventory of basic supplies to include ordering, tracking and adhering to procurement policies and procedures.
Bacterial culture and maintenance.
Perform in vitro immunoassays experiments such as western blotting, flow cytometry, microscopy, purification of recombinant proteins.
Perform PCR and qRT-PCR, and mutagenesis by homologous recombination, cloning of bacterial genes.
Handle and maintain tissue culture cell lines.
Maintenance and handling of animals and conduct experiments as required.
Assist in evaluation of research methods, procedures, and techniques based on established objectives.
Provide basic assistance to researchers in manipulating, computing, and analyzing data using basic Excel worksheets.
Explain work instructions and may adapt general methods and procedures in order to meet the needs of the research.
Assist in training other lab members on procedures.
In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.
Salary range for this position: $15.99 - $31.99.

Physical Demands
This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work requiring finer finger manipulation.
