Lab Specialist Intermediate

The Cliffe lab in the Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Cancer Biology, at the University of Virginia School of Medicine, is seeking a Laboratory Specialist to work on projects investigating Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) infection in neurons and activation of innate sensing pathways. The lab specialist will work closely with the PI to use virology, molecular biology and cell biology techniques to study the mechanisms of HSV reactivation latency and reactivation. Research activities will include, but not be limited to, propagating and titrating virus stocks, routine tissue culture, general molecular biology techniques (nucleic acid isolation, RT-PCR) and animal work. The lab specialist will also be responsible for laboratory maintenance. This includes training of other personnel, maintaining mouse colonies, ordering supplies, preparing stock solutions, organizing and maintaining virus stocks. 

The successful candidate must have a B.S. degree in biology, or a related field, and at least six years of laboratory experience, which may include experience gained while a student. Additional requirements include attention to detail in experimental work and record keeping, ability to handle multiple assignments, self-motivation and eagerness to acquire new skills. Preference will be given to candidates with a background in Virology and/or Molecular Biology, prior animal work and experience with tissue culture techniques. 

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's in Microbiology, Biology, Biochemistry, or a related science.

At least six years of laboratory experience, which may include experience gained while a student.

Additional requirements

Attention to detail in experimental work and record keeping

Ability to handle multiple assignments

Self-motivation and eagerness to acquire new skills

Preference will be given to candidates with a background in Virology and/or Molecular Biology, prior animal work and experience with tissue culture techniques.

This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring finer finger manipulation.
