The Beirne B. Carter Immunology Research Center is currently seeking a Lab Tech 2 up to Laboratory Specialist Sr. to join the laboratory of James Zimring, MD, PhD – an internationally recognized leading laboratory studying hematology (diseases of the blood). Areas of focus include immune disorders including autoimmune hemolytic anemia, oxidative stress biology as it relates to Malaria (including development of novel Malaria therapeutics), and the metabolic basis for blood/vessel interactions in cardiovascular disease. This position provides technical support to a basic science research laboratory that will consist of undergraduate students, research scientists, and technical staff. The tasks involve a combination of general laboratory duties including maintenance of a mouse colony (genotyping, husbandry, database management), the inventory of lab supplies, maintenance of lab equipment, and making common laboratory solutions. The lab professional will work closely with the PI and other lab members to learn and perform a variety of experimental procedures including but not limited to tissue harvesting and preparation, microscopy, PCR, Western blotting, and flow cytometry.
The lab functions as a team effort and only those who are willing to actively engage, as a productive team player will function well in this position. Intellectual engagement is required as well; those seeking to know, grow, understand and learn will be best suited to this position. The individual should be self-guided and creative in seeking possible solutions to experimental/design challenges at hand. Preference to those with animal research experience.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Lab and Research Tech 2
Education: Associate's degree
Experience: At least 2 years of lab experience which may include student experience. Bachelor's degree in related science will be considered in lieu of experience.
Lab Specialist
Education: Bachelor's degree.
Experience: 3 years of experience. 6 years of lab-related experience accepted in lieu of degree.
Lab Specialist Intermediate
Education: Bachelor's degree.
Experience: 6 years of experience in a lab technician role. Master's degree may substitute for required experience. 9 years of lab-related experience accepted in lieu of degree.
Lab Specialist Sr
Education: Bachelor's degree.
Experience: 9 years of experience in a lab technician role. May substitute with Master's or Terminal degree plus 4 years of experience in a lab technician role and supervisory experience. 12 years of lab-related experience accepted in lieu of degree.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Entry-level applicants with no specific lab experience are welcomed provided they have a strong science background.
Experienced applicants for more advanced positions should have experience in the following areas: general biological procedures and techniques and animal procedures.
Expertise in protocol and SOP development, ACUC, IRB, EH&S and other local, federal, or sponsor-driven regulations and policies is desirable.
An ability to work both independently and with others in a highly collaborative team-based environment.
Strong attention to detail and communication skills; general computer skills.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring finer finger manipulation.
