Research in Radiology advances medical imaging technologies and therapies that range from modeling and image processing algorithms to new clinical applications. The Lab Technician is a specialized laboratory professional working with the Radiology and Imaging Sciences Investigators and other Department research personnel. The Lab Technician plays a critical role in the conduct of the studies they support. The position is dynamic in that it involves working with multiple investigators and projects. The incumbent is responsible for key laboratory functions involving animals, performs minor surgeries, collects specimens and completes tasks and testing in accordance with good laboratory practices. **Responsibilities** **Essential Functions:** + Performs technical laboratory and research procedures under the general supervision of the principal investigator. + The research tech will be working on studies related to Alzheimer’s disease, traumatic brain injury, and spinal cord injury in rodent models. + The job will include rodent handling, performing TBI and spinal cord injury surgeries, performing drug administrations, assisting with MRI and PET imaging, preparing animals for HIFU procedure, administering and monitoring anesthesia in rodents, and data analysis. + The Lab Tech will also be required to create agendas for and occasionally present at research team meetings. + Performs semi-technical laboratory and research procedures under the general supervision of senior laboratory personnel. + The lab assistant will be working on studies related to Alzheimer’s disease, traumatic brain injury and spinal cord injury, primarily in rodent models but may also be involved in human imaging studies. + The job may include animal handling, surgery, neurological and cognitive assessments in rodents, MRI and PET imaging, immunohistochemistry, and basic data analysis. + The person in this position may also have the opportunity to assist with literature reviews, and manuscript preparation. + Lab Assistant would be expected to attend research team meetings, Imaging Sciences Research sponsored talks, and Radiology workshops. + This is an exceptional opportunity to work in a cutting-edge neuroscience neuroimaging research group. + The lab assistant will learn about the logistics of executing a research study and gain diverse technical expertise in preclinical research. + This position is a good entry-level position for an individual who is interested in pursuing an advanced degree in neuroscience or medicine. + Performs technical procedures in a research laboratory under minimal supervision by applying standard scientific techniques and analytical principles. + Previous experience with tissue prep and histological stains. + Research tech will also be responsible for organizing and supervising student volunteers and administrative tasks such as lab inspections. Seldom: Bending, reaching overhead. **Minimum Qualifications** Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, or other scientific disciplines in a related field or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience) required; knowledge of complex laboratory techniques, equipment, terminology, materials and substances. Skilled in the use of laboratory equipment, ability to create and analyze statistical calculations and prepare reports required; and demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills also required. OSHA training and certification in animal care and use or the willingness to complete the certification may be required by some departments.
