Lab Technologist - Microbiology

Performs laboratory procedures to obtain results for physicians in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases using established protocols that require the broad exercise of independent judgment and responsibility with minimal technical supervision. Works independently and communicates effectively with other healthcare professionals.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.  Other duties may be assigned.

Accurately performs any high complexity, moderate complexity or waived laboratory testing in the assigned testing division, which may require the broad exercise of independent judgment to include the use of advanced clinical laboratory instrumentation and equipment according to departmental Standard Operating Procedures.

Recognizes and corrects instrument malfunctions within the scope of the operators’ manual and records troubleshooting activities.

Confirms, verifies and reports test results independently. Monitors results for reasonableness and critical values.

Correlates and interprets data generated from testing.

Assists physicians in the interpretation of test results within the scope of the profession.

Conducts established quality control and performance improvement activities.

Provides clinical orientation and/or training of new employees/students.

Prepares and/or collects specimens (blood, urine, feces or other body fluids) for analysis.

Participates in Continuous System Improvement (CSI) and continuing education programs.

Performs instrument and assay validations.

Performs and signs off on technical competencies.

Performs competency for moderate and high complexity testing, as delegated.

QUALIFICATIONS:

A.           Education/Experience:

Must meet CLIA 88 personnel requirements for high complexity testing. Bachelor’s degree required in medical technology or related science field from an accredited institution; or, must meet CLIA grandfathered medical technologist regulations.

B.           Language Ability:

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents.  Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.  Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format. 

C.           Math Ability:

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.  Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

D.           Reasoning Ability:

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.  Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

E.           Computer Skills:

Word processing, Spreadsheets, E-mail, Laboratory Information Systems.

F.           Certificates and Licenses:

Certification by a recognized certifying agency for clinical laboratory professionals preferred (ASCP, ASMT, NCA, etc). Certifications may be required in specialized areas of the laboratory.
