Laboratory Aide II

POSITION SUMMARY:

Provides oversight for reference lab testing ensuring accuracy and timeliness of reporting. Performs applied techniques for CLIA waived testing and moderate complexity testing.  Accurately records laboratory test results. 

EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION:

An associate’s degree in biological science. Must provide education transcript prior to start of employment.

EXPERIENCE:

A minimum of one (1) year clinical laboratory experience preferred. 

COMPETENCIES:

Must be able to travel between ECHN sites on occasion.  Demonstrates efficient operation and knowledge of basic instrument theory of operation and function of components.  Requires weekends and holidays.

Laboratory Assistant II performs all of the responsibilities of a Laboratory Assistant I with the following added responsibilities. Multi tasks in a high performing way between all Laboratory departments. Performs CLIA waived tests and moderate complex testing in the laboratory department and performs proper quality control procedures associated with each. Exhibits technical expertise by assuring results are accurate with no data amends that would affect patient care. Processes specimens efficiently to generate test results within the established TAT.  Possesses knowledge of and follows laboratory (and/or hospital) policies and procedures that include  personnel policies, safety, infection control, blood borne pathogen, chemical hygiene, fire disaster, etc. Demonstrates knowledge of proper specimen requirements and processes the specimens according to the department specific protocols/procedures. Maintains the file system for all manual laboratory requisitions and ensures completeness of information for medical records coding. Processes marker lists (state, call, fax, problem log) and documents appropriate information in computer. Answers and/or directs to the appropriate person, all telephone and personal inquiries regarding test results, methodologies, requirements, status, billing questions and turnaround time.

Telephones abnormal results, when requested, to physician’s offices or nursing areas and fully documents the transactions.

Prepares specimens for any and all reference laboratory referrals; verifies that all requirements are met and properly logged; packages the specimen(s) for the Courier’s pickup each day or for special mailings.

Processes laboratory specimens by: examining the sample for proper collection criteria, verifying the patient demographic data (name, address, ID, physician, insurance information, etc.), entering the patient information into the LIS, or Reference Lab information system, centrifuging (where applicable), decanting, labeling and allocating, or planting of specimens to the various laboratory sections.

Processes samples for reference laboratories by preparing and packaging for courier pick up. Provides Reference laboratory result entry ensuring that all results are accurate and timely. Performs problem resolution for reference lab issues. May reconcile reference lab pending lists for all outstanding orders to be resulted. Tracking of reference. Maintains inventory by monitoring, requesting, receiving, and restocking work area of supplies.
