The UVA School of Engineering and Applied Science seeks applications for the position of a Laboratory and Research Technician and for the position of a Laboratory Specialist to be responsible for a number of laboratory support duties in the Innovations in Fabrication (IFAB) cleanroom laboratory in Thornton Hall. IFAB is a newly renovated 17,500 sq-ft cleanroom research facility for microfabrication and biomanufacturing research.
Lab and Research Technician 1
Responsibilities:
Laboratory and maintenance duties including the ability to stock, purchase and maintain inventory; upkeep and improvement as required. Work in ESD and clean room environment and maintain/control standards per S.O.P and work with Environmental Health and Safety as required to maintain a safe environment. Knowledge of shipping and receiving methods.Demonstrates basic mechanical aptitude with a willingness to be hands-on to ensure the delivery of results. This includes changing oil, troubleshooting and rebuilding vacuum pumps (knowledge of high vacuum systems is a plus but can be taught), and the use of tools to install gas and water lines using various types of materials.Perform regular maintenance on basic equipment as described by manager/process engineers.Responsible for the handling and organizing of hazardous waste chemicals for disposal. Understanding of chemical compatibility, names and formulas is a plus, though a willingness to improve your knowledge is a must (training will be provided). Employees are expected to participate in safety and health program enforcement including immediately reporting hazards, immediately reporting unsafe work practices and incidents to supervisors, wearing required personal protective equipment. Responsible for the tracking and handling of inventory (general chemicals, supplies and parts).Strong team player skills and the ability to work and communicate well with others (including students) to support internal/external customer (users) needs. This includes training students and other users on certain lab practices and basic equipment (we will train you).While the position will work under the oversight of the lab manager and process engineers, the person hired needs to take direction and ownership of assigned work and work independently.Ability to document work and information, including the ability to use Microsoft Excel and Word.Minimum Requirements:
Education: High school diploma or equivalent
Experience: At least 1 year of lab experience, which may include student experience. Bachelor's degree will be considered in lieu of experience.
Lab Specialist
Responsibilities:
The above responsibilities listed for Lab and Research Technician-1, as well as the followingAbility to learn new software applications.Ability to understand and apply testing standards and practices.Learn how to operate some of the microfabrication equipment in the facilityConduct laboratory microfabrication procedures following established processes to obtain data to help verify and calibrate the settings of the microfabrication equipment.Train students and other users on microfabrication equipment in the facility (we will train you)Ability to understand basic electrical schematics along with the ability to troubleshoot basic electrical equipment is a plus (willingness to learn is a must).Minimum Requirements:
Education: Bachelor's degree
Experience: 3 years of relevant experience.
Typical salary range for the two profiles are listed below:
Lab and Research Technician 1: range of $16 - $20 per hour
Lab Specialist: range of $18 - $23 per hour”
