Laboratory Assistant

Salary Range: $20.49 - $28.24

Pay rates are determined based on experience and internal equity.

Position Summary:

Under the direction of the Laboratory Director. Performs phlebotomy; prepares cytology specimens; processes specimens prior to analysis, performs culture setup. Performs collection of nasal and throat swabs. Performs departmental clerical duties. May perform registration functions prior to ordering laboratory tests. Performs preventative maintenance on minor equipment; cleans glassware. Collects various specialty tests such as urea breath kits and special blood collections. Performs TB skin tests. May perform therapeutic phlebotomy collections. Prepares and packages specimens for transport to reference labs. Participates in team activities and quality improvement. Ensures that quality care is provided in an efficient and safe manner. Demonstrates performance consistent with the mission, philosophy and goals of the organization. Remains flexible to changing systems. Treats staff, physicians, patients and families with consideration and respect. Interprets data about the patient’s status in order to identify each patient’s age specific needs and provide the care needed by the patient group. Fulfills other related responsibilities as assigned. If trained to do so, assist in pathology with cover-slipping of samples, filing, and other related responsibilities when needed.  Must work well under stress or tight deadlines.  Must work well with supervisors, co-workers, patients/residents, family members and visitors Duties and responsibilities may be added, deleted or changed at any time at the discretion of management, following written notice.

Essential Functions:

The ability to have the fine motor control skills to perform the duties of the position. Must have correctable vision to perform the duties of the position The ability to be supervised. The ability to work as a Team. The ability to have positive personal interactions with staff, patients/residents and visitors.

Position Qualifications:

Licensure: Must possess a valid Certified Phlebotomy Technician I or II certificate issued by the State of California.  Education: Any combination of training, education, and work experience which is deemed adequate by the State of California for issuance of a CPT I or II certificate. Must possess a Basic Life Support certificate from American Heart Association or American Red Cross. Experience:  Any combination of training, education, and work experience which demonstrates the ability to satisfactorily perform the responsibilities and duties of the position. Skills/Abilities:  Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, coworkers, hospital and medical staff.  Must possess adequate phlebotomy skills for difficult adults, children, and newborns.  Ability to cope with stressful situations on a regular basis.  Ability to work without close supervision.  Ability to work rapidly while maintaining quality.  Ability to prioritize activities as appropriate.  Excellent verbal and written communication skills.   Exercises good judgment, demonstrates initiative, emotional stability, tact and poise.  LVMC reserves the right to modify the minimum requirements depending on the needs of the organization.
