Summary

Under the direction of department leadership, the Laboratory Assistant performs clerical and technical lab duties in a timely and accurate manner, exceeding customer expectations. The role involves executing daily scheduled tasks, taking initiative within the scope of the role, and striving to improve work processes based on laboratory and client needs. The Laboratory Assistant aligns with and supports the mission, vision, and values of the organization as well as department goals and objectives. This position plays a critical role in the daily tasks performed and their impact on patients and providers to provide lifesaving diagnostic services.

ResponsibilitiesUnderstand and perform to all applicable regulatory and compliance requirements.Support leadership during audits.Ship, receive, and track packages and specimens while maintaining the integrity of samples, as needed.Receive, classify, and process specimens in an accurate and expedient manner.Inspect specimens and paperwork for accuracy and acceptability.Maintain sample identity and ensure samples are handled and stored at appropriate temperatures to prevent loss of sample.Use appropriate systems to accurately perform data entry functions.Proofread own work for content, spelling, accuracy, and document format.Maintain sample integrity and ensure proper identification of all specimens.Prepare samples for laboratory testing, as needed.Perform reagent preparation as needed.Operate, troubleshoot, and perform routine maintenance and calibration on equipment, as needed.Properly identify and clearly document sample issues or discrepancies and work with clients to resolve, as appropriate.Answer telephone calls and respond to email requests with professionalism and a high degree of courtesy and responsiveness.Research and resolve issues with follow-up to customers promptly.Use written and verbal communication skills to provide exemplary customer service to internal and external customers, and appropriately document interactions.Maintain organization of departmental records, as needed.Support the maintenance of reagent and supply inventory, as needed.Train others on job tasks, as assigned.Maintain all applicable competencies and sufficient continuing education credits.Perform duties in accordance with laboratory policy.Perform other duties as required or assigned within the scope of the job classification.Comply with all standard operating policies and procedures.Essential Skills & QualificationsHigh School diploma with 6+ months of work experience in production or healthcare.Associate's degree in life science or a related field with retail, serving, or fast-paced experience.Bachelor's degree in a science-related field preferred, but not requiredAdditional Skills & QualificationsPhlebotomy certification or experience in phlebotomy, specimen processing, or healthcare.Experience in laboratory, sample preparation, specimen processing, sample handling, accessioning, and packaging.Work Environment

The dress code is scrubs or business casual with long pants and closed-toe shoes. Equipment used includes centrifuges, freezers, refrigerators, pH meters, and microscopes. Overtime is not likely but additional hours are available if desired.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $17.50 - $21.31/hr.
