Laboratory Assistant I
Position Summary

The individual in this position sets up and supports the Science lab experiences, maintains maintenance and inventory of supplies, materials, and equipment; and communicates regularly with faculty teaching Science labs and with the Lab Coordinator. This individual participates in college and division pre-semester meetings and training as directed.  

The work schedule for this position is 15 hours per week. Flexibility is required based on course needs.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

Responsible for the setup of Science course labs and other faculty-identified laboratory learning experiences under the direction of the Lab Coordinator.Set up of Science lab equipment and technology: for example, virtual dissection tables, pH meters, autoclave, biological hoods.Operate Science lab equipment and technology under faculty direction in support of student lab experiences.Maintain an inventory of all equipment and supplies in the Science labs.Anticipate supply and material replacement needs and communicate with Lab Coordinator in a reasonable time frame.Coordinate cleaning, maintenance, and repair of all Science lab equipment with the Lab Coordinator.Coordinate storage of supplies, equipment, and materials used in the Science labs.Coordinate safety and disposal of sharps and biohazardous materials with the Lab Coordinator.Communicate regularly with faculty teaching in the Science labs and with the Lab Coordinator.Participate in college and division pre-semester meetings and training as directed.

Performs other related work as required.

Minimum Education and Training

High school diploma or GED requiredCompletion of science lab course work preferred2 years' experience in science field preferred

Minimum Qualifications and Standards Required

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of equipment and supplies used in science field preferredAbility to work with diverse populations requiredAbility to work as a team member requiredProficient oral and written communication skillsProficient in use of technology: personal computer, Microsoft Office products, internet

Physical Working Environment:  Describe the physical working environment and list any hazardous and toxic substances used in the performance of duties.

Works in a physical/biological science labVarious cleaning agents, 70% alcohol, silicone, sharps and gasses. Must be able to lift at least 20lbs,Use basic tools to calibrate equipment.

Work schedule is flexible based on course needs each semester. Work hours will be coordinated with the Lab Coordinator.
