Laboratory Assistant I - Urology
Description The Department of Urology is seeking to hire a Limited part time Lab Assistant I to assist in a benign urology laboratory engaged in translational surgical device design, tissue engineering and regenerative medicine research. The overarching goal of the Laboratory is to apply basic science and technological advancements to improve equity, quality, and consistency in urologic care across diverse healthcare settings, with a particular focus on lower urinary tract reconstructive procedures. Specific tasks of the lab assistant will be to complete a variety of laboratory cell culture and tissue culture procedures and assays. Experimental tasks will include physiological and mechanical testing of bladder and urethra, structural analysis including histologic and scanning electron microscopic tissue evaluation, and extracellular matrix assays. Management support duties includes inventory control, ordering of supplies, preparation of laboratory materials and reagents, handling of live animals, assistance in surgical procedures, and tissue preparation and analysis. Duties also include responsibility for support of other laboratory personnel in laboratory organization, maintenance of tissue procurement logs, maintenance and reporting of data obtained in ongoing experiments, and maintenance of lab in line with all safety and regulatory requirements. The lab assistant will be located primarily within the Sturm laboratory space, but will be anticipated to interact closely with surgical and engineering collaborating labs performing creating scaffolds, adhesives, and devices utilized in our laboratory's translational research. Other duties as assigned The Lab Assistant must be well organized, detail oriented, and able to quickly adapt to the addition of novel experiments and tasks Pay Range: $19.90 - $23.04 hourly Qualifications Required: + Cell culture experience including aseptic technique and primary cell culture All Required + Ability to perform general laboratory techniques such as weighing, sterilizing, titration, glassware washing, filtering, reagent and buffer prep, maintaining sterile + technique. + Skill in keeping accurate and complete research records. All Required + Ability to recognize irregularities and invalid results. All Required + Ability to make sound measurements and observations. All Required + Ability to work as part of a research team and establish cooperative working relationships with researchers, residents, students, and other support personnel + Ability to communicate in oral and written form, for the purpose of providing information to others in the laboratory. This includes the ability to record findings and methods in a laboratory journal in an accurate, complete, and timely way. + Ability to read and understand experimental protocols as guidelines. + Mathematical skills to calculate chemical and biological concentrations in solutions. + Organized, detail oriented, and able to quickly adapt to the addition of novel tasks. Preferred: + Animal husbandry knowledge (small animals: mice, rat, rabbit) and support of surgical procedures by surgical team + Knowledge of how to use and maintain modern laboratory equipment including incubators, tissue culture hoods, centrifuges, balances, and pH meter. + Ability to conduct multiple experiments in close temporal proximity. + Knowledge and understanding of molecular techniques.
