The Laboratory Assistant, LSBME assists the laboratory staff in the coordination of patient care. Performs phlebotomy procedures when required.

The Laboratory Assistant provides assistance in the laboratory for assigned section(s) of the laboratory while working under the direct supervision of medical practitioners or laboratory personnel. Assists with simple collection of blood specimens from inpatients and outpatients, performs specimen labeling, handling, computer data entry, sample preparation, preservation, processing and/or transportation and storage. Responsible for compliance to all programs and policies.

Job Description

GENERAL DUTIES

Specimen Processing:

Processes specimens maintaining positive specimen identification.Assists medical technologists and other lab staff with procedural set up, specimen plating, slide staining, etc.Maintains work area to ensure accurate processing of all specimens.Labels, processes and distributes specimens according to department standards.Sets up lab testing and/or procedure for medical technologists to read.Performs laboratory testing as evidenced by competency.

Specimen Routing:

Responds to specimen receipt via the pneumatic tube system or specimen drop-off and deliver to department sections.Appropriately matches all specimens received with orders in the LIS and enters collection information.Maintains the rejection log with appropriate communication documentation.Registers and processes the specimens collected.

Clerical Support:

Answers the phone and appropriately routes the call to the correct individual without disconnecting the call.Upon request of providers, nursing/other staff, retrieves laboratory results and faxes to the office/unit as appropriate.Scans necessary documents into the hospital information system as appropriate.Files requisitions, processes and distributes reports as assigned.

Supply Maintenance:

Checks instruments and assigned benches for appropriate reagents and supply levels, replenishing when necessary.Notifies appropriate person/team of low inventory items.Records receipt of supplies, verifies supplies delivered to the department and documents receipt in the department’s supply logbook.Label incoming supplies with received date prior to stocking.Monitors reagent expiration dates, notifies appropriate person of any expired tubes or supplies, any item found to be defective, contaminated or otherwise unacceptable.Assists in the annual inventory of supplies.

Specimen Collection:  

Assists with specimen collection.Determines appropriate specimen collection requirements for the tests requested, appropriate collection technique to use based on the tests requested and the amount of specimen required.Performs positive patient identification according to policy and procedure.Labels specimen collection tubes at the patient’s bedside according to policy and procedure.Disposes off collection equipment by appropriate means.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Required: High School Diploma/GED or equivalent OR 2 years of work experience.Preferred: Associate's Degree in Medical Technology/Clinical Laboratory Science.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS

American Heart Association - Basic Life Support Health Care Provider is required for performance of phlebotomy.

Basic computer skills.Must understand basic medical terminology.Ability to interact with patients, visitors and staff at all levels in a fast-paced environment.Sometimes under pressure, remaining flexible, proactive, resourceful and efficient, with professionalism and confidentiality.
