Laboratory Designer - Sciences

Your Role

Gensler’s San Francisco office is looking for a Mid-Level Laboratory Designer with 5+ years of experience.  As a Gensler Lab Designer, you will have experience with pre-design, programming & laboratory planning, feasibility studies, and detailed lab planning and documentation knowledge.  Specific work experience with commercial research spaces, medical device manufacturers, BSL2 labs, GLP and GMP facilities and similarly complex research and manufacturing environments.

Alternatively, life sciences professionals with a background in scientific research, laboratory management, or operations and facilities management interested in applying their skills to laboratory design will be considered.  Relevant experience for these candidates could include laboratory setup or relocation, equipment management, and scientific product development.

What You Will Do

Work directly with clients, scientists, researchers and related end-users to develop programming documents and lab room data sheets, preparing workflow diagram and equipment surveying, at all levels of detail, including new construction and renovations.

Specific responsibilities during the design phase(s) includes equipment placement, production of detailed lab plans and related details, coordination with MEP and other consultants, ensuring compliancy with life safety and regulatory agency code requirements for laboratory spaces.

Offer and support creative, sustainability-focused laboratory, technical design and detailing decisions that are in line with project goals yet pushing the envelope beyond traditional approaches to lab design, particularly in private industry.

Provide technical lab documentation. Follow verbal and written instructions to revise, develop and produce plans, elevations and details appropriately.

Document production in accordance with identified project specific checklists, Gensler standards and QA/QC standard program.

Day-to-day project work of laboratory projects from initial planning through construction administration

Work in collaboration with the entire architectural design team to create an integrated user experience

Work directly with Senior Lab Planners to participate in learning/training to advance your understanding of client programming and sciences expertise.

Assist in the development of standard materials that describe the portfolio, systems, processes of Gensler’s Sciences Practice Area.

Your Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree or higher in Architecture with 5+ years of related experience.

Revit use required.  

Knowledge of laboratory programming delivery and how design impacts those systems –including space, operational, and equipment programming, as well as MEP systems and casework.

Experience working with directly senior management representatives, scientists, laboratory managers and technicians, facilities and project managers, and other project stakeholders in determining and documenting programmatic requirements.

Demonstrable working technical knowledge and skill set to guide discussions for laboratory room/space development in conjunction with equipment and other technical attributes.

Ability to work with end users to develop process flows, planning process and critical adjacencies of research and laboratory rooms for optimum efficiency and flexibility.

LEED accredited preferred. Committed to the principles of sustainable design and resilient communities, able to demonstrate this commitment in a portfolio of work. 

**The base salary will be estimated between $90,000 – $105,000 plus bonuses and benefits and contingent on relevant experience.
