The Laboratory Manager develops a sense of community among visiting researchers using the Barrow Arctic Research Center (BARC) laboratories. The Lab Manager serves as a positive role model to researchers and staff members. The Laboratory Manager enforces the UIC Science laboratory rules and policies and acts as a liaison between researchers and UIC Science Project Managers and Facilities Manager.

 

The Laboratory Manager manages laboratory space in the Barrow Arctic Research Center (BARC) as well as relocatable laboratory space, cleans and inspects lab space, conducts final 'walk-through' with lab users prior to their departure, performs minor maintenance and/or calibration of laboratory equipment, send equipment out for repair, if necessary, monitors safe storage and labeling of laboratory chemicals. Other duties as needed.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions

 

Be knowledgeable about resources provided by UIC Science and be able to answer basic questions as well as who to refer visiting scientists to.Confront and document laboratory policy violations in the BARC facilities.Respond to emergency and critical incidents involving researchers related to health, safety, and security issues.Maintain BARC laboratory conditions by educating and encouraging researchers to respect the physical unit (neatness and safety), to maintain a reasonable noise level, and to respect the rights of other researchers.Communicate regularly with the Science Project Manager, Facilities Manager, and Administrative Assistant for scheduling questions, recommendations, supplies inventory and concerns.Develop Laboratories Policies and Procedures manual.Manage and maintain BARC common-use laboratory equipment, refrigerator and freezer space, and lab cleaning supplies. Report any facility issues to the appropriate parties.Assist with issues in the UIC Science dormitories and BARC laboratories such as lock outs, issuing keys, work order requests and inventory management.Assist with evening research arrivals.Capable of working independently and proactively looking for solutions to improve laboratories and researchers’ experience. Performs regular checks of safety equipment in labs spaces (eye wash stations, fire extinguishers, fume hoods, etc.)Work with staff members and research teams to keep BARC hallways, lab spaces, and storage spaces clean and clutter-free by working with teams to find storage solutions.Assist with freight arriving to the BARC by working with project managers to direct freight to the appropriate lab or storage space.Maintain and manager research posters and display pieces in the BARC.Assist with outreach activities. Qualifications

Knowledge and Critical Skills/Expertise:

Advanced level skills in Microsoft Office software suite - Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of employees and outside contacts. To receive and respond to instructions/assignments, must be able to read, write and speak English.  Strong interpersonal skills and good judgment with the ability to work alone or as part of a teamBasic computer skills requiredExperience maintaining laboratory equipment and making minor repairsExperience checking instrumentation calibration standards

Experience properly storing and labeling hazardous materials

Required Experience:

Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferredValid driver’s licenseExperience maintaining laboratory equipment and making minor repairsExperience checking instrumentation calibration standardsExperience properly storing and labeling hazardous materials

 

Physical Demands:

Must be able to lift up to 15 to 25 pounds Must be able to stand and walk for prolonged amounts of timeMust be able to twist, bend and squat periodicallyOccasional field work and deployment to remote locations may be required

 

Authorized Driver Requirement:  Employee must have a valid driver’s license and three (3) year clean driving record. Employee must follow all Authorized Driver Policy and Procedures regarding approved vehicle usage.

All employees must pass Non-DOT pre-employment drug screening and follow all UIC Non-DOT Drug and Alcohol Testing Program guidelines and requirements.

 

If working on a DOT project, employees must pass a DOT pre-employment drug screening and follow all DOT Drug and Alcohol Testing Program requirements.
