Summary of Job Duties:The primary role of a Laboratory Procedure Technician in Cytopathology is to assist in the preparation, processing, and examination of samples, particularly those from bodily fluids, fine needle aspirations, or biopsies, to identify abnormalities such as cancer, infections, or other diseases. This technician works closely with pathologists and cytotechnologists to ensure accurate results.
Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

Associate degree in laboratory science, medical laboratory technology degree - OR - 60 credit hours obtained from an accredited institution that must include 24 credit hours in Medical Technology or Science Courses which include 6 credit hours of Biology & 6 credit hours of Chemistry.

Baccalaureate Degree in laboratory science, medical laboratory science, biology, chemistry, or related fieldGeneral Clinical lab experienceCytology lab experience

Additional Information: 

Receives specimens from all sources and correlates test ordering information with requisitions.  Verifies correct patient identification and notes discrepancies (rejection criteria).  Orders and accessions cytology specimens in the Epic system.  Prioritizes, labels, and processes all specimens using judgment while assessing each sample. Prepares, stains, coverslips, and labels each specimen according to the cytology lab policy and procedure manual. Assembles and triages cases for screening by cytotechnologists while maintaining accurate identification throughout the process. Receives all laboratory supplies and keeps inventory of all stock.  Dates all reagents when they are opened and regularly checks expiration dates to ensure quality and maintain standards. Checks expiration dates on patient samples, lab supplies, and lab equipment. Cleans the cytology laboratory and all of the equipment to ensure compliance with safety standards. Demonstrates use of lab equipment including the ThinPrep processor, centrifuge, cytocentrifuge, autostainer, and coverslipper.
