Microbiology offers comprehensive testing for patients with infectious diseases. Our high quality, state-of-the-art diagnostic services combined with readily available consultations with pathologists and laboratory scientists have made us a national referral center for microbiology testing.
**A caregiver in this position works 6:00am - 2:30pm.**
A caregiver who excels in this role will:
+ Responsible for the technical and scientific oversight of the laboratory, day to-day laboratory operation and personnel performing testing and reporting test results.
+ Participate in selection of test methodology appropriate for the clinical use of the test results.
+ Participate in the verification of the test procedures performed and the establishment of the laboratory's test performance characteristics, including the precision and accuracy of each test and test system.
+ Ensure enrollment and participation in an HHS approved proficiency testing program commensurate with the services offered.
+ Establish a quality control program appropriate for the testing performed, establish the parameters for acceptable levels of analytic performance and ensure that these levels are maintained throughout the entire testing process from the initial receipt of the specimen through sample analysis and reporting of test results.
+ Resolve technical and operational problems and ensure that remedial actions are taken whenever test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications.
+ Ensure that patient test results are not reported until all corrective actions have been taken and the test system is functioning properly.
+ Identify training needs and ensure that caregivers performing tests receive regular in-service training and education appropriate for the type and complexity of the laboratory services performed.
+ Evaluate the competency of all testing personnel and ensure that caregivers maintain their competency to perform test procedures and report test results promptly, accurately and proficiently.
+ Ensure the competency of testing personnel in area of responsibility (i.e. moderately complexity and/or high complexity testing).
+ Evaluate and document competency assessment of testing personnel in laboratory area of responsibility at least semiannually during the first year the testing personnel tests patient specimens and annually thereafter.
+ Evaluate testing personnel competency through directly observing routine patient test performance, including patient preparation, specimen handling, processing and testing, monitoring the recording and reporting of test results, reviewing intermediate test results or worksheets, quality control records, proficiency testing results, and preventive maintenance records, directly observing performance of instrument maintenance and function checks, assessing test performance through testing previously analyzed specimens, internal blind testing samples or external proficiency testing samples, and assessing problem-solving skills.
+ Maintain competency assessment documentation.
+ Supervise caregivers and handle staffing, hiring, orientation, scheduling, evaluating and developing caregivers.
+ Develop and maintain department objectives and services, assist with annual operating and capital budgets, and monitor, analyze and justify expense and revenue with departments.
+ Assist with policy and procedure development and ensure compliance.
+ Maintain instruments and equipment in accordance with manufacturer's specifications.
+ ABG Lab: perform blood gas puncture and analysis.
Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
+ Bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science or medical technology from a four-year college or university
+ OR a bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university, education and training equivalent to meet ASCP Board of Certification qualifications for Histotechnologist (HTL)/Cytotechnologist (CT) and meet the requirements and training of a Cytotechnologist as dictate by most current CLIA regulations. Diploma and/or transcripts must be provided and education will be verified.
+ State of Florida supervisor's license in one or all disciplines.
+ Five years of clinical laboratory training and/or experience in high complexity testing.
+ ABG Lab: bachelor's degree in respiratory science or a related biological or chemical science field, State of Florida RRT license and Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA).
Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
+ American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) certification.
+ Two years of clinical laboratory management or supervisory experience. Laboratory training or experience can be met by any combination of years of clinical laboratory training or experience, such as a medical technology internship, full-time experience performing non-waived testing for the required number of years and/or part-time experience performing non-waived testing with 2,080 hours equivalent to one year.
+ If the required clinical laboratory training and experience occurred at an outside facility, a signed, official letter from the facility or organization is required which details the dates and laboratory discipline experience and training.

+ Visual acuity to study specimens under a microscope.
+ The ability to distinguish colors.
+ Fine motor skills and manual dexterity to handle specimens and lab equipment required to process specimens and repair equipment.
+ May be required to stand for long periods of time.
+ Light lifting may be required.
+ May be exposed to hazardous chemicals, biohazards, radioactive materials, etc. **Personal Protective Equipment:**
+ Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
