About The Job

Manages daily laboratory operations to include specimen collection and laboratory testing. Evaluates current processes and methodologies for cost effectiveness and efficiency.

Helps develop an annual operational plan (including scope of service) integrated with MercyOne's strategic plan and related departments operational plans in order to efficiently provide services.

Helps to develops, implements and periodically reviews department/organization policies and procedures that guide and support the provision of services complying with MercyOne New Hampton Medical Center's policies, federal and state regulations.

Maintains current knowledge base of trends, policies, regulatory standards, and legislation and advises administration when pertinent.

Develops and maintains departmental staffing plan detailing appropriate associate classifications and qualifications consistent with the department’s operational plan, projected volumes, and other relevant indicators. 

Participates in annual human resource planning process providing recommendations for staffing proactive recruitment and long-term needs.  Assures daily staffing adheres to plan.

Continuously assesses and improves the department’s performance based on, but not limited to the department’s quality plan monitors, process improvement initiatives, patient/associate satisfaction data and associate safety and injury prevention.

Interviews and selects qualified staff and assures associates are appropriately oriented.

Continually develops staff through competency assessments, in-services and continuing education, and performance appraisal process.

Helps analyze capital needs, monitors and analyzes ongoing performance and productivity and implements necessary corrective plans.

Maintains effective inter-departmental communication and cooperation. Regularly conducts department meetings and huddles to share information, provide education, and solicit feedback for process improvement.

Helps evaluate new procedures and methods for cost, efficiency, and effectiveness.

Ensures adequate supplies are available for testing.

Attends Regional Network Laboratory Meetings to acquire information on new methodologies, regulatory issues, and education.

Performs clinical testing as deemed necessary and uses clinical knowledge as a resource for laboratory staff.

Communicates with and performs duties following MercyOne New Hampton Medical Center's Guiding Behaviors. Supports and abides by all medical center, departmental, and safety policies and procedures.

Proactively identifies safety concerns surrounding the work environment.  Acts in a professional manner reflecting the mission, philosophy, and values of MercyOne New Hampton Medical Center.

Provides competent patient care to the above indicated patient populations by obtaining and appropriately interpreting data, making appropriate decisions based on demonstrated knowledge of age-specific growth and development, and appropriately adapting procedures and treatments.

Performs other responsibilities as requested by the Regional Lab Manager, Ancillary Services Director and/or CEO.

What We Are Looking For

Education:

Associate degree in medical laboratory science is required.  Bachelor's degree in medical technology is preferred.

Experience: 

Demonstrated competence of at least two years of laboratory experience. Management or supervisory experience is preferred.

Special Skills, Competencies, and Aptitudes:

MLT or MLS (ASCP) registry required. To be eligible to sit for the exam you must have successfully completed an MLS/MLT internship. (Exam must be attempted within the first six months of employment and successfully passed by two years of hire.)

Must have ability to use discretion and good judgment.

Must understand regulatory and accreditation standards.

Must have ability to communicate effectively.
