Laboratory Support Supervisor
Job Description The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) enriches the environment and protects public health for all New Yorkers by providing 1.1 billion gallons of high-quality drinking water, managing wastewater and stormwater, and reducing air, noise, and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 employees. DEP's water supply system is comprised of 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes throughout the system’s 2,000 square mile watershed that extends 125 miles north and west of the City. The Bureau of Water Supply seeks to hire an Associate Laboratory Microbiologist I for a position in the Distribution Water Quality Operations (DWQO) Division, Drinking Water Operations Directorate located in Queens, New York. Under general direction, of the Section Chief of Laboratory Support and Microbiology, the Associate Laboratory Microbiologist I will serve as Laboratory Support Supervisor and will support the Distribution Laboratory in continuing to operate 365 days per year and ensure compliance with New York State Environmental Laboratory Approval Program (ELAP) and other applicable regulatory requirements. The Laboratory Support Supervisor will supervise and provide essential laboratory support for sample processing and analysis in accordance with regulatory requirements for drinking water and environmental water testing using methods approved by New York State. Specific duties include: - Supervising the Distribution Laboratory’s chemistry and microbiology washrooms as well as inventory and supply rooms. - Supervising the preparation of micro bottles, media, reagent water, etc. required for sample collection and ensure all washroom staff follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and procedures for operation and maintenance of glassware washers, autoclaves, Millipore systems, ovens and other instrumentation. - Being responsible for reviewing electronic washing, and sterilization records for completeness and accuracy. - Performing periodic review of written log book entries in media room. - Reviewing and tracking maintenance records on instrumentation and equipment. - Instructing and supervising staff in the proper use of equipment. - Reviewing data. - Preparing standards and reagents. - Preparing labels and packages, obtaining satisfactory proficiency test results. - Preparing method Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) under direction of supervisor. - Preparing reports and special projects. - Preparing and maintaining inventory of equipment and supplies. - Preparing work orders for laboratory repairs. - Submitting receiving reports for delivered items. - Ensuring compliance with all Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) regulations. Please note candidates must currently be serving in the Associate Laboratory Microbiologist title to be considered for an interview due to active civil lists. A Certificate of Qualification issued by the regulatory authority is not required. Preferred Skills: - Familiarity with Microsoft Office suite software including Excel, Word, Power Point. - An understanding of the Agency’s Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS). - Familiarity with data compilation protocols, including use of data reporting programs associated with laboratory information management systems i.e., STARLIMS. - Ability to ensures data entries in notebooks and files of computer output are complete and legible. - Ability too promptly submits data for review by specified deadline. - Ability to maintain accurate electronic and written records. - Analytical ability. - Organizational skills. - Strong written and communication skills. - Interpersonal skills. - Time management skills. - Commitment to honesty, integrity, and to support others. - Adherence to all standard operating procedures and ability to follow good lab practices. Hours/Shift: 35 hours per week / May be required to work shifts including nights, Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in medical technology or in one of the chemical, physical, or biological sciences, and one year of laboratory experience at the technologist level in the appropriate laboratory specialty or specialties; or 2. Ninety college credits from an accredited college or university including or supplemented by either (a) or (b) below, and one year of laboratory experience at the technologist level in the appropriate laboratory specialty or specialties. (a) For those whose training was completed prior to September 15, 1963: a total of at least 24 credits in chemistry and biology courses combined, including at least nine credits in chemistry, of which six credits must be in inorganic chemistry; and including at least 12 credits in biology courses pertinent to the medical sciences. (b) For those whose training was completed after September 15, 1963: 16 credits in chemistry courses acceptable towards a major in chemistry, including at least six credits in inorganic chemistry; and 16 credits in biology courses acceptable towards a major in biology; and three credits in mathematics.
