Laboratory Tech 2 or Laboratory Specialist, The Robert M. Berne Cardiovascular Research Center

The Robert M. Berne Cardiovascular Research Center (CVRC) at the University of Virginia’s School of Medicine seeks applicants for Laboratory Tech 2 or Laboratory Specialist entry level to participate in studies in the identification of factors and mechanisms that regulate the stability of late-stage atherosclerotic lesions and the probability of thromboembolic events including heart attack or stroke. The successful candidate will be expected to:

Provide technical support to a basic science research laboratory that will consist of graduate and undergraduate students, post-doctoral fellows, and technical staff. 

Perform general laboratory duties.

Provide maintenance of a mouse colony (genotyping, husbandry, database management). 

Maintain inventory of lab supplies. 

Provide general maintenance of lab equipment.

Prepare common laboratory solutions. 

Work closely with the PI and other lab members to learn and perform a variety of experimental procedures including but not limited to tissue harvesting and preparation, microscopy, and flow cytometry to examine the immune response. 

Design and optimize laboratory procedures.

Provide training on laboratory techniques. 

Manage common lab space and resources. 

Assist the Lab Manager in preparing the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (ACUC) protocol applications 

In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

 

Preferred knowledge, skills, and abilities:

Experience in general biological procedures and techniques such as PCR genotyping and cell culture. 

Experience in animal procedures.

General computer skills.

Conduct experiments, recording and analyzing results

Ability to work both independently and with others in a highly collaborative team-based environment. 

Strong attention to detail. 

Strong communication skills. 

Expertise in protocol and SOP development, ACUC, IRB, Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) and other local, federal or sponsor-driven regulations and policies.

Self-guided and creative in seeking possible solutions to experimental/design challenges at hand.

Preference to those with animal research experience.

Ability to perform histological procedures like preparing tissue samples for routine microscopic analysis, routine sectioning and staining.

 

Qualified candidates must have:

Lab Tech 2

Education: Associate's degree

Experience: At least two years of lab experience, which may include student experience.  Bachelor's degree in related science will be considered in lieu of experience.

 

Lab Specialist
Education: Bachelor's degree and three years of lab experience. Master's degree in related science and one year of related lab experience. Six years of lab-related experience accepted in lieu of degree.

This is a restricted position; continuation is dependent on funding and satisfactory performance.
