Answer telephone calls. Assist with filing and preparing requisitions and documents for scanning and storage. Organize and file test reports and documents. Manage inventory: unpack shipments, stock lab supplies, reconcile invoices.Accessioning, Specimen Processing and Distribution
Determine acceptability of specimens for laboratory testing. Accession, process and distribute patient samples within the laboratory consistent with accuracy and quality assurance goals of the laboratory. Access and navigate the Pathology Document Control System, Hospital Information System (HIS), and Laboratory Information System (LIS) to order, label and accession patient specimens. Request additional information from appropriate resources. Assist in problem solving (e.g., duplicate tests, missing samples, incorrect samples and missing information); notify care team of unacceptable specimens (e.g., clotted, hemolyzed, wrong container, etc.).Maintain Equipment/Laboratory Support
Attend procedures and assist staff. Perform and document maintenance as specified in equipment procedures. Ensure continuous operation by routinely monitoring the status of reagents, parts and supplies. Monitor error codes and perform basic troubleshooting. Notify a supervisor or senior operator if unable to resolve an equipment problem. Document problems, action taken and outcomes. Operate the dishwasher to clean laboratory supplies; Prepare reagents. Maintain work area in a well-stocked, clean condition.Perform Rounds of Satellite Blood Refrigerators
Inspect blood refrigerators to ensure satisfactory operation. Evaluate stored blood for expiration and satisfactory storage conditions. Remove expired or unsatisfactory blood products from satellite refrigerators and return to laboratory for quarantine and further evaluation. Communicate with nursing regarding stored blood components.Receive and Accept Inbound Blood Deliveries
Unpack blood deliveries. Inspect blood components on receipt for acceptable conditions. Receive blood components into blood inventory and place in storage pending confirmatory testing.Professional Development
Fulfill departmental continuing education requirement.

Works with infectious disease and/or hazardous materials. May have exposure to noise from laboratory equipment and pneumatic tube system Requires frequent (standing/walking/sitting/hand pipetting) for long periods of time and the ability to lift up to 40 lbs. Desired Qualifications* A Bachelor or Associate's degree with equivalent experience preferred. Reasonable knowledge of the methods, materials and equipment used in laboratory activities is desirable. Previous experience in performance of standard laboratory procedures is highly desirable.Work Schedule
This full time, 40 hours position will be on the day shift and may require rotating weekends and holidays with other staff.

Background ScreeningMichigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings. Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
