During work hours, the assistant will check all sewing machines for any troubleshooting issues and maintain the machines in working order. All issues must be reported to supervisor to discuss fixable problems. The Laboratory Technician will ensure that all students using the open lab are presently enrolled in a course that operates sewing machines, that they are properly signed in and out, and that students maintain the cleanliness and safety rules of the sewing lab. Laboratory Technician’s may be asked to set up tutoring sessions with beginner level students during working hours. During the spring semester the Laboratory Technician will also engage in assisting the Program Coordinator on various tasks relating to the Fashion Show. This may include model assignments, organization of line up and help during production on fashion show day. Specific Duties and Responsibilities + Record a log of all students who use the open lab hours + Assign machines to students and remind students to maintain the equipment during open lab hours. + Maintain that all sewing machines are in working order by routinely checking for problems. + Light maintenance such as changing bobbins, tension, rethreading sergers, checking and maintaining oil levels in all Juki machines. + Report to supervisor after each work session of any issues and especially any breakdowns of equipment that cannot be fixed by lab assistant + Report to Public Safety any issues or concerns of students’ behavior or accidents during open lab hours + Maintains the cleanliness of the lab + Performs additional duties with Program Coordinator during the spring semester for fashion show OVERALL PURPOSE AND RESPONSIBILITY: The primary and most important overall responsibility of all employees is to provide service in a pleasant, helpful, and effective manner to our students and other members of the College community. Minimum Qualifications Education Required: Completed the Apparel Construction and Pattern Development courses or earned an AAS in Fashion Design. Experience Required: Hands on knowledge of operating Juki machines (threading, sewing construction, and use of sergers). Experienced in clothing construction. Skills/Abilities /Knowledge /Other Requirements: + Ability to work with students in a constructive, courteous manner. + Ability to work as part of a team with faculty, lab personnel, and other individuals Proficient in laboratory practices. Additional Information INSTITUTIONAL EFFECTIVENESS: Collaborates with department members and/or the Compliance, Assessment and Research team to support planning, assessment, data collection and reporting for continuous improvement of the college.
