Summary:
Riverside Healthcare is seeking a compassionate and knowledgeable Lactation Consultant to join our Nursery team in Kankakee, Illinois. The Lactation Consultant will play a vital role in supporting new mothers and their infants by providing expert guidance on breastfeeding and infant nutrition. This position requires a strong commitment to promoting breastfeeding as a key component of maternal and infant health, along with the ability to collaborate effectively with healthcare professionals and families.



Required Experience:




Preferred Experience:

• Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to provide empathetic support to families.
• Knowledge of current lactation best practices, breastfeeding support techniques, and infant nutrition guidelines.
• Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team to ensure the best outcomes for patients.


Required Licensure/Education:

• Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN) or a related field required
• Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of Illinois
• International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) certification is required.


Preferred Licensure/Education:

• Master’s degree in a relevant field preferred.

Compensation:

Minimum hourly rate: $40.10

Maximum hourly rate: $52.12

 

Responsibilities:
Essential Job Duties:

• Assess and evaluate breastfeeding practices and challenges for mothers and infants in the nursery.
• Provide one-on-one consultations and education for new mothers regarding breastfeeding techniques, positioning, and milk supply management.
• Develop individualized care plans based on the needs of mothers and infants, ensuring continuity of care and support.
• Offer group education sessions on breastfeeding topics, including benefits, techniques, and common concerns.
• Collaborate with nurses, pediatricians, and other healthcare professionals to create a supportive environment for breastfeeding mothers.
• Maintain accurate records of patient assessments, interventions, and outcomes in compliance with hospital policies.
• Stay current with best practices, research, and guidelines in lactation support and infant nutrition, incorporating evidence-based approaches into practice.
• Advocate for breastfeeding-friendly policies and practices within the healthcare setting and the broader community.
• Team member will maintain annual education requirements

Video Display Terminals: Average
Blood and Body Fluids: Frequent contact with IV devices and high potential for contact with contaminated body fluids (blood, vomitus, stool and amniotic fluid) does create a high risk. However, appropriate usage of needleless IV system, universal precautions, and protective equipment should greatly minimize risk.
TB or Airborne Pathogens: Minimal risk exists, given the patient population; however, usage of protective clothing and universal precautions minimize any existing risk

Sensory requirements (speech, vision, smell, hearing, touch):
Speech: Required to communicate with patient, family and MD's
Vision: Needed to perform necessary assessments of patient status; medication administration; usage of computer terminals.
Smell: Helpful to note presence of incontinence, vomitus, blood; electrical/fire safety.
Hearing: Needed to hear patient call lights, calls for help, patient concerns; alarms (i.e. monitors, fire codes, via PA)
Touch: Needed to perform percussive assessments and to comfort patients; manipulate tools
