Summary:
+ The Lactation Consultant (LC) functions to enhance the normal process of lactation and to prevent, assess, and manage lactation problems in the in-patient setting. The LC is a health care professional who is qualified to provide education and consultation for routine and special circumstances related to breastfeeding. The Lactation Consultant collaborates with multi-disciplinary team members to develop plans of care for breastfeeding families, performs consultations at appropriate intervals, and anticipates the patient discharge and establishes appropriate plan of care. The LC develops appropriate patient/family relationships by integrating patient/family concerns, beliefs and values into the plan of care. The LC continually evaluates the effectiveness of this plan of care and adapts the plan based on the patient's response.
Responsibilities:
+ Completes initial and ongoing assessments using principles of therapeutic communication, observation, and physical assessments
+ Maintains competency in providing direct patient care to pregnant and lactating women and infants.
+ Serves as a breastfeeding expert and advocate who encourages informed decision-making and provides assistance to clients through education, counseling, support and referrals
+ Demonstrates the proper use of breast pumps and other breastfeeding accessories
+ Supports the Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative by promoting the 10 Steps to Successful Breastfeeding and adhering to the international code of marketing of breast milk substitutes.
+ Serves as a mentor to new team members and lactation interns
+ Participates in performance improvement and quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient outcomes, quality of care, and patient safety
+ Incorporates evidence-based practice, research, and standards of care into clinical practice
Credentials:
+ Intnl Brd Cert Lactation Cnslt (Required)
Education or Equivalent Experience:
+ Bachelor of Arts or Science (Required)
+ Education Specialization:Nursing or health professions preferredEquivalent Experience:
+ And 2+ years Outpatient or Inpatient Lactation Consultant experience
