Job Description

The Laboratory Analyst I is an entry-level position in the Laboratory Analyst series. This role involves learning the knowledge and skills necessary for testing and analyzing wastewater and recycled water samples using the appropriate instrumentation. Positions at this level are supervised and follow established procedures and methods. As experience is gained, assignments become more varied and are performed with greater independence.

ResponsibilitiesPerform physical, chemical, and microbiological testing and analysis on wastewater and recycled water samples.Use appropriate laboratory instrumentation for sample analysis.Maintain accurate and up-to-date records using automated and manual systems.Evaluate laboratory results to detect errors and recommend solutions.Set up, operate, calibrate, and perform routine maintenance on complex analytical instruments.Prepare clear, complete, and accurate records and reports.Essential SkillsKnowledge of chemistry, microbiology, and closely related sciences.Methods and techniques used in physical, chemical, and bacteriological testing of water and wastewater samples.Understanding of quality control/quality assurance practices.Knowledge of laboratory, plant, and field safety methods and practices.Ability to calibrate and maintain laboratory equipment.Familiarity with applicable state, federal, and local regulations.Proficiency in chemical laboratory methods and equipment.Sampling techniques and methods.Additional Skills & QualificationsAbility to work with chemicals and equipment used in wastewater and recycled water analysis.Maintain accurate records using both automated and manual systems.Perform a diverse range of standard physical, chemical, and microbiological testing and analysis.Evaluate laboratory results to detect errors and recommend solutions.Set up, operate, calibrate, and perform routine maintenance on complex analytical instruments.Prepare clear, complete, and accurate records and reports.A degree in sciences with major coursework in chemistry, microbiology, or a closely related physical science.Work Environment

Employees work in a laboratory setting and may be exposed to potentially toxic chemicals and conditions. Fieldwork may expose employees to loud noise levels, varying temperatures, inclement weather, road hazards, vibration, chemicals, mechanical and electrical hazards, and hazardous physical substances and fumes. Employees may interact with upset staff and the public while interpreting and enforcing departmental policies and procedures. The work schedule is Monday to Friday, 7am to 3:30pm.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $32.00 - $34.00/hr.
