This role: + Performs work directly related to land surveying. + Works on construction survey crews and operates survey instruments, acts as rod person, data collector and/or note keeper. + Communicates with engineers, designers and property owners on a frequent basis. + This position works under immediate/direct supervision. We’re famous for our top-notch benefits—come see why everyone’s talking! Essential Functions Handles moderately complex issues and problems and refers more complex issues to higher-level staff. Is capable of handling basic to moderately complex issues and provides team support and training, as needed. Assists in collection of survey data used for capital improvement projects, property acquisitions, engineering studies and construction staking. Adjusts design in the field in order to make projects work and stay on schedule. Works on critical infrastructure projects vital to the city and public health. Operates, maintains and calibrates survey equipment including robotic total stations, GPS, and conventional instrumentation. Applies GPS technology to survey and locate various municipal features, services and property. Locates sewer manholes, mainlines and service lines by calculating the position of and setting reference monuments such as rebar, stakes and hubs. Assists with research of survey monuments, descriptions, deeds, etc. and plans on how to and what to measure based on an understanding of how the survey is going to be used. Generates technical data for the city’s geographic information system (GIS). Performs rod duties or operates survey instruments in a journey capacity. Uses survey equipment and software such as data collectors, electronic distance measuring instruments, precision levels and base/rover GPS units to gather data. Develops vertical and horizontal control prior to conducting topographic survey work. Documents data electronically using data collection software and personal computer applications, and manually by use of field books. Calculates and reviews design grades and elevations shown on plans for accuracy and agreement with field information. Takes and maintains technical, clear, informative and accurate field notes and measurements. Utilizes data collected in the field to calculate construction cut sheets with the use of Microsoft Excel spreadsheet and survey software. Acts as lead survey technician in the field in the absence of the crew chief. Communicates concerns back to the engineers, designers and others. Updates citywide benchmark archives with new benchmark information by listing their location, field book number, page and elevation. Updates the field book index with new project numbers and field book page numbers. Requirements Required Knowledge, Experience, And Training + High school diploma or equivalent and + 2 years of experience in surveying or a related field, or + an equivalent combination of education and/or experience Knowledge of: + survey crew functions and techniques including GPS, topographic, design and construction surveying; + mathematical calculations through trigonometry; + basic drafting procedures and application to AutoCAD; + maintenance and operation of survey instruments; and + understanding of land surveying law as outlined in Idaho Code and abide by the surveying ethics. Ability to: + utilize survey equipment with a high degree of precision and accuracy; + read and interpret survey orders, plans, maps and blueprints; + use basic computer spreadsheets and database software; + understand and comply with all rules, policies and regulations; + communicate effectively in the English language at a level necessary for efficient job performance; and + perform all essential as assigned by an authorized employee, supervisor and/or manager with or without reasonable accommodation. Individuals must be capable of operating vehicles safely and have an acceptable driving record. Preferred Knowledge, Experience, And Training Certificate or associate degree in land surveying and three years of experience directly related to surveying. Licensing And Other Requirements Valid state-issued driver's license.
