Our faculty and scholars examine issues central to the human experience through historical, philosophical and creative lenses. They help improve how individuals and societies live through a more nuanced understanding of how we behave and interact. And they question the physical universe and test laws, principles and practices to create new knowledge.
Our college also embraces interdisciplinary research, and our six research clusters integrate perspectives and expertise from several disciplines to address complex problems and innovate creative solutions. Position Summary The Fostering Oregon’s Workforce in Advanced and Restorative Healthcare Program at Portland State University (FORWARD PSU) aims to prepare a cohort of 30 American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) undergraduate students to pursue a terminal degree in a health professions program (MPH, DMD, PharmD, MD) and enter critical healthcare roles in Oregon. Developed through a deep partnership between PSU and the Northwest Native American Center for Excellence at OHSU (NNACoE), FORWARD PSU will identify undergraduate AI/AN students on healthcare pathways and engage them in a holistic, paid 15-month intensive including clinical internships, multi-tiered mentorship, and culturally responsive curriculum to help ensure the future AI/AN representation in the healthcare workforce needed for a healthy Oregon.
The Program Coordinator for the Fostering Oregon’s Workforce in Advanced and Restorative Healthcare Program (FORWARD PSU) is responsible for managing the comprehensive 15-month program designed to support and prepare 30 American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) undergraduate students for advanced healthcare careers. This role involves coordinating program activities, including clinical internships, mentorship, and culturally responsive curriculum, while ensuring effective communication between all constituents, including participants, faculty, mentors, and partner organizations like OHSU’s Northwest Native American Center for Excellence. The Program Coordinator will track student progress, facilitate workshops, support recruitment efforts, and work closely with the leadership team to ensure that the program meets its goals of increasing AI/AN representation in Oregon’s healthcare workforce.
In accordance with the AAUP collective bargaining agreement this position is open only to current PSU AAUP academic professionals. Article 17 Section 11 refers.
Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s degree and 2+ years of relevant experience Awareness of common institutional barriers for AI/AN (American Indian/Alaska Native) students Excellent oral and written communication skills Ability to communicate and work effectively with AI/AN students Ability to manage and coordinate events Strong interpersonal, project management, and organizational skills Proficiency with standard office software such as MS Office and Google Suite applications Preferred Qualifications Experience working with college students Knowledge of clinical health pathways 3+ years of relevant experience Bachelor’s degree in a STEM, health, or relevant field (i.e. psychology, communications, education) Experience in new program development, coordination, strategic planning, and procedure development An understanding of or the willingness to learn about Indigenous ecological and cultural knowledge and partner to respectfully apply this framework to STEM student programming Key Cultural Competencies Create an environment that acknowledges, encourages, and celebrates differences. Function and communicate effectively and respectfully within the context of varying beliefs, behaviors, orientations, identities, and cultural backgrounds. Seek opportunities to gain experience working and collaborating in diverse, multicultural, and inclusive settings with a willingness to change for continual improvement. Adhere to all of PSU’s policies including the policies on Prohibited Discrimination & Harassment and the Professional Standards of Conduct. Environmental Stewardship Contributes to a culture of environmental stewardship, practices resource conservation, and actively works toward achieving long-term sustainability goals. Work Days/Hours Monday - Friday 8 am - 5 pm (at 1.0 FTE) Total Compensation Range & Benefits Statement Salary is dependent on several factors, and new employees will typically start around the Q1 level to allow for later growth within the salary band. PSU has a structured process for determining starting compensation, taking into account years of related experience, applicable skills, knowledge and abilities, market parity, and internal equity.
The starting annual salary for this position will be between $54,684 – $67,632 (at 1.0 FTE), but may be negotiated above this range, dependent upon the factors above, the budget of the hiring department, and approval from HR.
