**Position Overview:**
SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory is one of 17 Department of Energy (DOE) National Laboratories. Operated by Stanford University on behalf of the DOE, SLAC develops and operates some of the world¿s premier science facilities, including the first hard X-ray free-electron laser. Researchers from SLAC and other premier institutions around the world use our facilities to investigate some of the most exciting and important problems facing our society in areas such as clean energy, environmental science, biomedicine, and advanced materials.
LCLS is seeking a Project Advisor for the Matter in Extreme Conditions Upgrade (MEC-U) Project as a member of the Facility Advisory Committee (FAC). This position will primarily be responsible for providing advice to the MEC-U Project management to achieve mission delivery in a timely and predictable fashion, with a focus on facility design and technical performance and associated areas of risk. The advice will be used to develop strategies for planning and executing the project. This position will provide feedback, advice, and guidance to the MEC-U Project Director and Technical Director.
**Note** : This is a non-benefits eligible casual-nonexempt position (work less than 50% full-time equivalent), not to exceed 980 hours in a calendar year.
SLAC is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) laboratory operated by Stanford University and based in Menlo Park; CA.
**Your specific responsibilities include:**
+ Provide advice and specific recommendations in the following areas:
+ Input and review of designs of technical systems of the MEC-U project
+ Interfaces and integration of systems
+ Technical risks and mitigations
+ Review of trade-off analyses for technical decisions
+ Consideration of facility operations impacts of technical designs
+ Insights into relevant systems at other facilities
+ Insights on supply chain considerations for designs
+ Help the Project team prepare for project reviews, audits, and appraisals as necessary, including Preliminary and Final Design reviews and documents.
+ Advise Project management on corrective action options in the event of predicted or actual departures from baseline.
+ Other areas at the discretion of the FAC and Project Director or Technical Manager.

**To be successful in this position you will bring:**
+ Bachelor's degree and minimum ten years of relevant experience in technical areas relevant to the project (e.g. lasers, experimental systems, control systems, conventional facilities, facility operations) or combination of education and relevant experience. Advanced degree may be required in some areas.
+ Experience leading and preparing teams for technical reviews.
+ Knowledge to challenge assumptions, design parameters, and alternatives to vet the preferred recommendation.
+ Thorough knowledge of and experience with management, engineering, and planning practices necessary to successfully execute a major project to include: defining, analyzing, and refining project concepts and alternatives; integrating requirements analysis, risk identification and analysis, to develop a cost-effective preferred solution to meet mission needs.
+ Ability to define essential functions and capabilities necessary for operations and science initiatives.
+ Experience performing project engineering and project controls of complex industrial or commercial projects.
+ Demonstrated experience leading large, complex projects or programs.

**The expected pay range for this position is $27.75 - $92.48 per hour. SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory/Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.**
