Scope of Position:
Lead the day-to-day planning, preparing, serving and cleanup of all meals. Handle inventory and ordering. Supervise all kitchen staff and volunteers. Maintain safety and security of the men, women, and children in the facility. Treat all receiving services with respect and implement the rules of the shelter program fairly and equitably. This is a drug and alcohol-free facility.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

• Ability to follow and give verbal and written directions.
• Ability to address multiple projects in a time-sensitive manner.
• Non-violent crisis intervention and mediation skills.
• Possess an understanding of budget planning.
• Familiarity with standard janitorial equipment, kitchen equipment, telephone, computer and copier.
• Ability and willingness to work with people of diverse backgrounds and circumstances.
• Ability to interact with staff, volunteers and the public in a positive, professional manner in conformity with The Salvation Army Mission Statement.
• Possess the self-discipline necessary to perform repetitive tasks without lessening quality of work.
• Ability to work with minimum supervision and high degree of independence.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality in all areas of work.
• Willingness and ability to have a flexible work schedule.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Plan, coordinate and prepare a daily variety of balanced and nutritious meals.
• Maintain inventory of pantry, including ordering and stocking of food and cleaning supplies.
• Train, supervise and collaborate with other kitchen staff and volunteers as necessary.
• Plan and manage the yearly budget for the kitchen.
• Maintain condition of kitchen tools and equipment in accordance with OSHA regulations.
• Participate in weekly documented meetings with kitchen staff and assistant director.
• Participate in reviews of employees under your supervision.
• Ensure no food, supplies or other materials, including food boxes, are distributed outside of standard meals without prior approval.
• Be knowledgeable of and enforce facility policies and procedures.
• Provide inside and outside security for the building.
• Ensure continued cleanliness of kitchen and dining room.
• Assist with acceptance of in-kind donations, including keeping a receipt log and issuing tax receipts.
• Participate as a member of the Safety Committee.
• Relay all pertinent information concerning clients to appropriate staff members.
• Other duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to lift, move, or carry materials up to 200 lbs. with assistance. Ability to sit, reach, bend, twist, climb stairs, and use ladders.

Working Conditions:

• Occasionally work outdoors at times in inclement weather.
• Work on many projects at once with interruptions and noise from ringing telephones, printers, and walk-in traffic. Frequent phone and in-person contact with people from diverse backgrounds who may be angry, hostile, confused or frustrated.

Miscellaneous:

Education and Work Experience:
Previous 3 years’ experience working as a cook in a nursing home, assisted living facility, shelter or hospital preferred.

The Salvation Army does have a dress code. This will be shared with you at the time of employment.
