Lead Counsel (Data Protection)

**Summary:**
Meta is looking for a Lead Counsel (Data Protection) to advise on data protection matters across the business involving complex legal and regulatory issues. This will include advising on data protection governance, data transfers, incident response, and new data-related laws.This requires business acumen, a substantive knowledge of EU/UK privacy laws, and the capacity to both work independently and with large multi-stakeholder teams.
**Required Skills:**
Lead Counsel (Data Protection) Responsibilities:
1. Support Meta’s global privacy program, including by developing and improving privacy frameworks and processes to ensure we meet our obligations under global privacy laws.
2. Support business teams in evaluating the impact of privacy laws, regulatory guidance, enforcement actions.
3. Develop and maintain subject-matter expertise in relevant areas.
4. Support members of the legal, policy, and business teams on privacy matters, including in areas related to data protection governance, data transfers, incident response, use of AI, and new data-related laws.
5. Engage with privacy regulators in connection with investigations and new initiatives.

Meta requires all employed attorneys to have a law degree or equivalent certificate to permit the practice of law and be appropriately licensed and authorized to practice law for the company in their assigned work location. Unless prohibited under local law, an attorney must hold a current practicing certificate (including where required from the relevant authority in the jurisdiction of the assigned work location) or the local law equivalent bar registration or license as may be applicable.
7. Minimum of 5+ years of relevant legal experience, including at a law firm or prior in-house experience (applicable litigation, regulatory or more general product counselling experience will be considered).
8. Articulate and analytical legal professional, who is diligent, proactive, collaborative, and who has demonstrated sound legal and business judgment and strategic thinking.
9. Working knowledge of global privacy laws, regulations, privacy programs and industry guidelines.
10. Experience working on multiple projects in a deadline-focussed environment, delivering practical advice under pressure.
11. Experience using business judgment and with client counseling.
12. Experience taking on projects involving different subject matters, and working with cross-functional organizations to drive alignment.
13. Enthusiastic about technology and its potential for positive impact in peoples’ lives.
