UPMC Pinnacle is looking for a Lead ECMO Specialist to lead their team in Harrisburg, PA.
As assigned, a Lead Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenator (ECMO) Specialist performs, under the supervision of a licensed physician and according to prescribed procedures, those functions necessary for the support and treatment of the cardiopulmonary system of a patient. The Lead ECMO Specialist performs advanced technical work in the selection, preparation, operation, and maintenance of the ECMO circuit and accessory equipment including the heater/cooler. The work areas are primarily the intensive care units and operating room, but the possibility exists to provide ECMO throughout the hospital and during critical transport internally or externally by air and ground. This individual will be required to travel between UPMC Hospitals to deliver ECMO services per institutional policy. In addition, the individual will participate in a rotating on-call schedule per institutional policy. This individual will hold and maintain all requisites and responsibilities of an ECMO Specialist in addition to the Lead ECMO Specialist responsibilities.
This role will work 12 hours shifts (three – four times a week), as well as rotating weekend shifts.

Responsibilities:
Ensure billing is being completed and services verified for all ECMO/ECMO Standby/ECMO Covered VADs. Maintain continuing education, RN/RT licensing and clinical competencies. Maintain optimal communication, close cooperation, and consultation with attending physicians. Demonstrate the application of clinical ECMO skills by adhering to departmental and professional standards. Demonstrate knowledge of and proficiency with the operation and maintenance of ECMO equipment. Maintain proficiency with various ECLS techniques to include ECMO, VAD, CRRT, Hemofiltration, ultrafiltration, plasmapheresis, hypothermia. Responsible for the administration of medications, blood components via the extracorporeal circuit in consultation with or under the direction of the attending physician. Participate on the call schedule per institutional policy. Assist with transportation of ECMO patients by land and air per institutional policy. Achieve financial objectives through the preparation, examination, and justification of departmental budget; by monitoring expenditures and initiating corrective actions. Maintain appropriate supply inventory and equipment. Evaluate and transport supplies and equipment. Maintain ELSO Database including Case Entry, validate data and ensure accurate case reporting. Compile reports for Quality Meetings from the ELSO Quality Reporting Platform ArborMetrix. Assist Director with completion of the ELSO Center of Excellence Award. Maintain periApp Database including Case entry, validate data and ensure accurate case reporting. Assist Director with monthly ECMO Care Conference. Prepare patient summaries for case presentation and discussion. Assist Director in preparation of agenda items for the monthly meeting. Moderate meeting and facilitate discussion among the group when Director cannot be present for meeting.Participate in quality improvement process and report to leadership quarterly.Assist with educational conferences including planning with the UPMC CCEHS office. Present at least one original slideshow on an ECMO related topic each year. Participate in planning and execution of simulations and panel discussions.Have an active role in research projects. Complete IRB modules for University of Pittsburgh. Represent ECMO Team on research projects that are outside of the ECMO Department. Develop quality projects for ECMO. Work with Director, Medical Director, Surgeons, Critical Care Physicians, General Surgeons, Fellows, and nurses on ECMO related research projects. Serve as a role model of excellent clinical quality and customer service. Assume leadership role meeting specific description and responsibilities of that scope of practice. Maintain and strengthen clinical and managerial competency by learning new specialties, reviewing professional publications, and participating in growth oriented developmental activities .Assist with inventory management and control of equipment. Serve as the ECMO liaison on at least one ECMO related Taskforce. Provide ECMO education throughout the hospital to all units and departments where ECMO is provided. Precept new ECMO Specialists and support annual competencies for the ECMO team. Sustain ECMO competencies for all ECMO and perfusion staff. *Performs in accordance with system-wide competencies/behaviors. *Performs other duties as assigned.
