Within J&J Innovative Medicine, the R&D Business Technology team is the strategic information technology partner providing innovative technology solutions that enables Global Development to expertly deliver on our portfolio and helps provide transformative medicines to patients around the world while proactively improving agility, embracing innovation and creating the organization we need to deliver in the future.
The Lead Engineer will be owning the vision and prioritization of new technical features and enhancements for our products to meet business needs. This position encompasses both execution and transformation roles behind technical solutions, ensuring that the product’s architecture aligns with the technology roadmap and adheres to our engineering standards.
**Key Responsibilities:**
+ **Technical Leadership & Expertise:**
+ Define and lead all aspects of the overall engineering and technology architecture, roadmap, and technical decisions, using modern design patterns and architectural principles for the product needs in coordination with the Technical Product Manager, Product Group Lead Engineer, and Business Unit Architect.
+ Help & mentor squad members problem-solve technical challenges and guide them on implementing
the solution, using the squad technology strategy as a guide
+ Accountable for code written by team members that is high quality, well documented,
aligned to standards, efficient, and is easy to maintain
+ **Clinical R&D Expertise (data management focus):**
+ Leverage experience with clinical data from trials, including understanding of SDTM (Study Data Tabulation Model), clinical programming, and familiarity with clinical systems such as EDC (Electronic Data Capture), CDR (Clinical Data Repository), SCE (Source Clinical Evidence), MDR (Master Data Repository), and data review platforms.
+ Implement data review optimization techniques demonstrating but not limited to AI & Machine Learning to enhance the efficiency and correctness of data analysis, ensuring effective decision-making and operational effectiveness.
+ **Strategic Collaboration:**
+ Collaborate with the Business & technology collaborators to strategize and implement the product vision.
+ Work collaboratively with diverse internal and external (vendor) teams to ensure smooth transitions and minimal operational disruptions.
+ **Development & Problem-Solving:**
+ Actively engage in build activities while supporting system architecture /design/code reviews; facilitate technical challenge problem-solving within the squad using the technology strategy as a guide.
+ Drive testing and deployment of software solution, including ensuring sufficient automated testing to ensure solution quality
+ Scale pilot projects into production-ready systems, focusing on performance, reliability, and quality while mitigating risks through quality assurance during scaling efforts.
+ **System Maintenance & Operations:**
+ Ensure effective operations by ensuring stability, performance, and availability of the Central & Medical Monitoring capabilities by addressing system issues, data inconsistencies, and performance bottlenecks.
+ Assist in data migration from legacy systems, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and compliance with business rules.
+ Manage technical debt, including vulnerability scanning
**Qualifications:**
+ **Education:**
+ Bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, IT, or a related field.
+ **Experience and Skills:**
+ **Required:**
+ At least of seven (7) years of relevant IT and business experience.
+ At least five (5) years of proven experience in the Life Sciences industry.
+ At least three (3) years of application development & solution design experience on data intensive applications
+ Proficiency with cloud services such as AWS, GCP, or Azure.
+ Strong understanding of global clinical regulations, computer systems validation, and compliance requirements.
+ Knowledge of Business Intelligence (BI) and analytics tools (such as Spotfire, Tableau)
+ Experienced in Data Engineering & Analytics, Cybersecurity, Emerging Technologies, Decision Science & Intelligent Automation, Cloud DevOps & Security, Device / Software / Platform Engineering
+ Experience in Product Development, with specific experience in software development and engineering (required).
+ Experience managing technical priorities within the Backlog functional knowledge including CI/CD pipelines, test automation, solution architecture, API architecture and design, and systems integration
+ Strong SDLC ( Agile framework) foundation in areas Testing, IT Project Management, Systems Support, and IT Compliance.
+ A history of working on large enterprise projects across multi-functional teams.
+ Ability to translate business requirements into actionable IT solutions.
+ Proficiency in at least one coding language (e.g., SAS , R, Python, Java) with code review experience.
+ Excellent understanding of clinical systems and system/data integrations for analytics, compliance, and dashboarding.
+ Strong communication skills; ability to present complex information effectively to diverse audiences.
+ Experience in working with diverse teams and promoting a positive team culture.
+ **Preferred:**
+ Familiarity with Databricks is desirable.
+ Understanding of AI/ML concepts within a pharmaceutical business environment.
+ Familiarity with Generative AI and Large Language Models.
**Travel Requirement:**
+ Willingness to travel domestically up to 20%
