Purpose:

This role will provide leadership and direction to safely deliver South32’s Exploration strategy at the project level through effective management and deployment of specialised technical and operational support services across the South American exploration portfolio, including evaluation of new opportunities for consideration and pursuit.

 

Specifically, the role is responsible for the delivery of in-house consulting level geological support for exploration and advanced projects, and generative activities in South America, and the timely assessment of acquisition opportunities globally.

 

The role is also responsible for contractor and project level management, and the implementation and continuous improvement of geoscience standards and practices to deliver against Exploration base-metals strategy, targets and objectives.

 

Qualification/s Required: Bachelor’s Hons degree in geoscience or an earth sciences discipline, with preference for MSc or PhD level.

Minimum years of work experience: 10+ years’ experience in exploration or consulting.

 

Technical/Specialist Skills Required:  

Strong multi-commodity geoscience evaluation and targeting background, developed from substantive early to advanced stage exploration and development experience across diverse deposit styles and geographies. A strong background in structural geology and base metals is required, particularly porphyry / skarn, carbonate replacement, SEDEX and VMS systems. Advanced understanding of the geological processes driving mineralised systems and the formation of mineral deposits, discovery exploration value drivers and strategies across a range of commodities. Advanced generative exploration and reconnaissance skills required, and the ability to balance technical, commercial, and operational and risk elements based on incomplete and / or ambiguous information. Specialized skills in core logging and mapping, and the interpretation and integration of complex and often fragmented datasets including lithological, alteration, mineralogy, structural, geochemical, geophysical, remote sensing and geochronological data. Advanced and relevant experience modelling geological data in 2D and 3D using GIS and implicit / explicit modelling software e.g. Leapfrog / Vulcan.
