Responsibilities:
The Lead Laboratory Technician is responsible for accurate specimen processing, test performance, and reporting of
patient results. Lead lab technicians adhere to the clinical laboratory’s quality control policies, document all quality
control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations, and maintenance performance in accordance with the
clinical laboratory’s policies and procedures. This position is responsible for leading the laboratory team during their
shift and providing support to the General Laboratory Supervisor.
Breakdown of Daily Tasks:
o Follows the clinical laboratory’s procedures for specimen handling, specimen processing, specimen
storage, test analyses, timely reporting and maintaining records of patient test results.
o Is an immediate resource for lab techs for assessment and direction of workflow processes, review of
patient results that are rerun or reextracted, review of QC issues, timely maintenance, and instrument
issues. Prioritizes workflow based on specimen volume and ensures daily, weekly, and monthly tasks are
completed as assigned.
o Performs maintenance and function checks on all instrumentation as needed, monitors all temperatures
as needed; and performs any calibration as needed.
o Follows the clinical laboratory’s established policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within
the clinical laboratory’s defined acceptable levels of performance.
o Adheres to the laboratory’s quality control procedures and quality assessment policies to ensure accurate
and true patient results to include documenting all QC activities.
o Can identify problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and exercise
professional judgment to correct the problem or immediately notify lab lead or lab supervisor for follow
up.
o Documents all corrective action taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory’s established
performance specifications.
o Maintains adequate inventory of assays, consumables and supplies needed by the lab. Ensures lab is
stocked, clean and organized.
o Participate in proficiency testing and follow COLA guidelines and laboratory procedures in handling,
testing, and reporting results of the PT samples. Reviews and submits PT results and compiles results from
returned PT reports. Documents corrective action if PT results are unacceptable.
o Adheres to established CLIA, COLA and OSHA guidelines and company policies and procedures to ensure a
safe and ethical work environmento Communicate effectively at all levels within the laboratory and with company personnel.
o Performs all responsibilities and other assigned lab duties with a collegial manner and as a team.
o Directly reports to the General Laboratory Supervisor.
