Summary This is a Lead Medical Technician, position located at Central Alabama Veterans Health Care System in Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service. The primary purpose of this position is to lead the work of other medical technicians performing blood collection procedures by venipuncture techniques. Responsibilities The Lead Medical Technician may rotate through various areas locations within the health care system, giving support and training. Major duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to: Phlebotomy duties including collecting, accessioning, and processing patient specimens to be sent to the main hospital laboratory for testing. Distribute and balance the workload among employees in accordance with established workflow, assure timely completion of the assigned workload, and assure that each employee has enough work to keep busy. Keep in touch with the status and progress of work and make day- to- day adjustments in accordance with established priorities. Obtain assistance from the supervisor on problems that may arise, such as backlogs which cannot be resolved promptly. Instruct employees in specific tasks and job techniques and make available written instructions, reference materials and supplies. Give on the job training to new employees in accordance with established procedures and practices. Maintain a current knowledge and answer questions of other employees on procedures, policies, directives, etc. and obtain needed information or decisions from supervisor on problems that arise. Monitor area physical facilities (ventilation and lighting) and equipment to ensure a safe, clean, presentable work environment. Inform patients of available services and employee activities. Resolve simple, informal complaints of employees and refer others to supervisor. Performing other duties as assigned.
