At Houston Methodist, the Lead Nurse Midwife NWD position is an Advance Practice Nurse (APN), an advanced clinical leader and scholar who functions at the Expert level of Benner's model of clinical practice responsible for managing and providing women's health care services related to pregnancy, childbirth, the postpartum period, family planning and routine gynecological needs. In addition to performing the duties of a Nurse Midwife, this position leads and coordinates interprofessional activities, focusing on clinical practice, consultation, education, and research, incorporating evidence into practice. The Lead Nurse Midwife NWD position uses expert communication skills to serve as patient and family advocate to educate, mentor and coach staff in clinical practice, assuming an advanced leadership role in analyzing systems to anticipate and or reduce risk and improve patient safety and quality. In addition to responsibilities which include contributions at the department and house-wide levels, with expectation to collaborate, manage, and lead system-wide and national initiatives, this position functions as a clinical provider maintaining and promoting health of the patient requiring women's health care.
**PEOPLE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS**
+ Role models and coaches staff to use efficient and effective communication to establish and maintain a team environment, and to include the patient and family as a part of the team regarding their plan of care. Partners with the interprofessional health care team to facilitate communication with patient and family across the continuum of care.
+ Serves as a preceptor by mentoring others regarding care of defined populations in resource utilization and time management. Teaches coworkers to develop comprehensive plans of care in collaboration with patients and families, incorporating individual differences and preventive planning.
+ Conducts self in a manner that is congruent with cultural diversity, equity, and inclusion principles. Fosters staff engagement by demonstrating active listening, requesting, and acknowledging feedback, making equitable decisions, providing rationale when appropriate, and supporting organizational goals. **SERVICE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS**
+ Conducts quality, timely, license-appropriate, patient care, under physician supervision, for a defined patient population(s), identifying normal/abnormal health characteristics, recognizing subtle cues to change in patient condition and focusing on identified expected unit/optimal outcomes, individualized to the patient.
+ Prioritizes care based on the patient's needs, abilities, and preferences. Advocates for patients/families concerning ethical conflicts; develops supportive policies and guidelines, offers educational resources; empowers patients/families to speak/represent selves when possible.
+ Leads interprofessional healthcare team with issue resolution. Drives initiates to meeting department target for patient satisfaction.
**QUALITY/SAFETY ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS**
+ Roles models, by example, safe and effective care to complex patients and leads interprofessional care planning for identified patient populations by initiating outcome, quality, and safety improvement activities. Integrates and contributes to professional practice standards, policies, procedures, protocols and leads improvements in patient safety-related processes.
+ Anticipates/prevents and resolves/elevates early declines in patient condition and emergent situations. Identifies normal/abnormal health characteristics, develops plan of care, initiates appropriate interventions, and evaluates care outcomes on defined patient populations(s). Labors with the patient and may deliver the baby.
+ Leads/assists in improvements/initiatives in patient safety processes at the clinic and service line level, through peer-to-peer accountability, reporting near misses and identifying solutions by collaborating with the interprofessional team. Role models situational awareness, using teachable moments to improve safety.
+ Leads and supports colleagues and staff in conducting evidence-based practice/performance improvement projects and implementing findings. Facilitates active involvement of others in team meetings, department activities and process improvement initiatives.
**FINANCE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS**
+ Implements department strategies to achieve financial target and mentors others to do the same through timely documentation of care, decreasing length of stay, optimizing efficiency, and other areas according to department specifications.
+ Measures and analyzes resource allocation based on patient needs and staff experience, knowledge, and skills; contributes to department plans for resource utilization and capital needs. Identifies cost saving or revenue opportunities.
**GROWTH/INNOVATION ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS**
+ Leads colleagues and staff in identifying areas for improvement in patient care or department operations and developing solutions by participating in department projects or interprofessional team activities. Submits noteworthy resources and best practice advances for consideration for implementation.
+ Generates and communicates new ideas to lead the team to creative strategies that improve quality or service and impact the department and address organization or department priorities.
+ Serves as instructor in continuing education or formal program and expert consultation. Seeks opportunities to identify self-development needs and takes appropriate action. Ensures own career discussions occur with appropriate management. Completes and updates the My Development Plan on an on-going basis.

**EDUCATION**
+ Master of Science - Advance Practice Nurse Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM)
**WORK EXPERIENCE**
+ Five years experience as an Advanced Practice Nurse, Certified Nurse Midwife
**LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS - REQUIRED**
+ RN - Registered Nurse - Texas State Licensure and/or Compact State Licensure within 60 days **OR**
+ RN-Temp - Registered Nurse - Temporary State Licensure within 60 days **AND**
+ APRN - Advanced Practice Registered Nurse - Texas Board of Nursing **AND**
+ CNM - Certified Nurse Midwife (AMCB) **AND**
+ AP - Prescriptive Authority - Texas Board of Nursing **AND**
+ DEA - Narcotics License (DEA) -- Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) registration **AND**
+ BLS - Basic Life Support (AHA) **AND**
+ ACLS - Advanced Cardiac Life Support (AHA)
