Lead Operational Technologist - Laboratory
The Lead Operational Technologist hired for the purpose of working on 2nd and 3rd shifts must be able to work in the following laboratory departments: Hematology, Microbiology, Chemistry, Serology, Urinalysis, Blood Bank and perform all required test procedures in each department. The Lead Operational Technologist will maintain the integrity of day-to-day operations through focused oversight of laboratory procedures with a high accountability for problem solving for the entire department, meeting regulatory requirements in the assigned areas of responsibility. This position will be responsible for the oversight of all technical and non-technical staff on the 2nd and 3rd shifts. This position will provide direction in the handling of all technical and non-technical problems. The Lead Operational Technologist will work closely with day shift Laboratory Managers and Supervisors to ensure that all policies and procedures are followed consistently regardless of shift. This individual will also work as a Generalist Technologist as staff levels indicate. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT(S): + Must be licensed as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist by the New York State Education Department. ASCP or AMT certification as a Medical Technologist required. + Must meet NYS Department of Health qualifications for Laboratory Supervisor as stated in Public Health Law section 58.1-1.4 + Qualifies as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist as described in Public Health Law Section 58.1-1.5 + Holds a bachelor’s of science degree and has had at least four years of pertinent experience in an acceptable laboratory subsequent to qualifying. + Holds a Master’s of science degree and has had at least two years of pertinent experience in an acceptable laboratory subsequent to qualifying. + Three years of experience in a supervisory role preferred. + Must have strong leadership skills. Independent, mature, self-motivated, reliable and responsible + Able to serve the needs of patients ages neonatal to geriatric. + Able to deal with all types of customers in a pleasant, professional manner. + Must possess excellent organizational skills and able to handle numerous tasks simultaneously. + Must possess excellent communication skills + Knowledge of Word, Excel preferred. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POSITION: + Maintains awareness of all activities in the department including oversight of our Phlebotomy and Processing department, takes appropriate action to ensure smooth, efficient workflow. Reviews daily work of technical staff. Holds regular meetings to maintain open communication. + Responsible for managing all aspects of clinical section of the lab, ensuring that each of the staff under his/her supervision follows the proper protocols of the lab. Thus, ensuring accurate and precise reporting of patient results in a timely fashion. + Adjusts daily work assignments in response to staffing shortages or workload demands in order to complete testing within acceptable turn-around times. + Monitors and completes payroll to ensure accurate pay period statistics. + Recommends changes in operation of department to improve overall service. + Troubleshoots and solves technical problems. Utilizes company service when warranted. Ensures instrumentation is well maintained. + If problem occurs, ensures workflow has been directed to alternate methodologies until problem is resolved. Notifies Lab Manager of all issues affecting testing. + Trains Medical Technologists and Technicians to troubleshoot. Develops effective training programs for staff. + Assist department supervisors in training of personnel in new procedures through in-services or individual instruction. + Reviews patient results for accuracy, appropriateness and acceptable Turnaround time. + Monitors staff to ensure they follow safety guidelines and use appropriate PPE’s. + Plans schedules for staffing coverage. Provides schedules to staff in advance. Makes sure there is appropriate staffing to meet department needs. + Interviews applicants and makes recommendations on hiring of new staff. Reviews qualifications of applicants. Works with HR to expedite hiring of qualified applicants. + Prepares and completes annual evaluations using documented information concerning employee performance. Completes evaluations in a timely manner. Prepares and conducts disciplinary action as appropriate. + Completes annual staff competency assessments and maintains records for regulatory compliance. Communicates and coordinates with department specific supervisors with regard to competencies when necessary. + Maintains monthly salary expenses within budgetary limits. Informs manager and director when unexpected expenses arise. + Accepts new challenges willingly. Involved in process improvement activities. + Adheres to hospital policies and procedures related to mandatory education, annual health assessment, and licensure verification. Current license as required by N.Y. State will be forwarded to Human Resources upon renewal or issuance. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: + Should be able to push/pull, lift/move 25 lb., be able to perform moderately difficult manual manipulations such as using a keyboard, writing, and filing for extended periods of time, must be able to perform tasks which require hand-eye coordination such as data entry, typing and using photo copiers. Mobility requirements may include the ability to be stationary at a workstation for a prolonged period time in addition to being able to squat or be mobile for a reasonable length of time and distance. Communication requirements include the ability to comprehend the spoken English language in addition to being able to communicate and read the English language. Salary Range: $33.71-50.56 /hour Pay is based on experience, skills, and education. Exempt positions under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) will be paid within the base salary equivalent of the stated hourly rates. The pay range may also vary within the stated range based on location.
