Lead Optical Engineer

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

Carry out optical design under the guidance of senior members of the design team. Use machine learning (ML) to develop new calibration algorithms. Collaborate with mechanical, electrical and testing team members on assembly automation algorithm. Maintain accurate and detailed documentation of designs, processes, and test results.

Education & Experience

MS or PhD in optics, physics or related technical fields. 2-5 years of related experience is preferred. 

Skills

Good understanding of optics, especially liquid crystal optics and fiberoptics. Very familiar with Zemax and machine learning (ML).  Ability to work with little supervision and to manage assigned tasks effectively.  Ability to learn and apply new technologies and tools to develop innovative solutions.

Excellent interpersonal communication and presentation skills.

Working Conditions

Good office working conditions. Occasionally required to work in a Class 10000 clean-room environment, wearing smock with mask and gloves.

Physical Requirements

Able to move light equipment and tooling (<25lbs) as needed when setting up test benches.

Safety Requirements

All employees are required to attend scheduled trainings, follow site EHS procedures and Corporate EHS standards.  This includes the use of proper protective equipment (PPE) as required by the job responsibilities.

Managers will ensure that all safety and environmental procedures are followed consistently.  They will ensure that risk assessments are performed, proper training, work instructions, required PPE is available, and will monitor compliance.

Depending on location, this position may be responsible for the execution and maintenance of the ISO 9000, 9001, 14001 and/or other applicable standards that may apply to the relevant roles and responsibilities within the Quality Management System and Environmental Management System.
