Job Description
Assists pathologists in the preparation and performance of all gross surgical examinations. Provides guidance and direction to medical laboratory assistants, pathology residents, and morgue diener. Assists in the training of pathology residents in the preparation of gross surgical specimens.
Job Responsibility
Under pathologists' supervision assists in the preparation and performance of all gross surgical examinations. Assures appropriate specimen accession and numbering of all surgical specimens. Describes gross anatomic features and takes samples for microscopic examination. Photographs pertinent specimens and makes microscopic slides. Assists in preparation of frozen section. Provides guidance and assistance to Medical Laboratory Assistants. Assists in the training of pathology residents by providing guidance in the preparation of gross surgical specimens for dissection; selection and preparation of autopsied material; general maintenance of equipment in gross pathology and morgue; as well as general and specific photography techniques for organs and other gross specimens. Maintains equipment, ensures adequate supplies and cleanliness of the autopsy suite and Gross Pathology Cutting Room, and assists with quality assurance activities of the autopsy service. Job Qualification
Bachelor's Degree required, or equivalent combination of education and related experience. Current License to practice as a Pathology Assistant required, plus specialized certifications as needed. Minimum of 4 years of technical experience and 2+ years of leadership / management experience, required.
