Lead Pathology Support Tech, Full Time Days, MMC
Job Function: 01. Performs accurate patient registration for outpatient laboratory specimens. Patient Processing Orders tests accurately for patients as requested. Picks up specimens from various locations as required. Organizes work to maintain efficient workflow for the section. Meets acceptable turnaround time and productivity standard for section. Recognizes processing errors/discrepancies or problems and notifies appropriate personnel. Resolves processing errors, discrepancies, inquiries or problems. Job Function: 02. Patient Processing Orders tests accurately for patients as requested. Processes patients in an efficient, organized informative manner. Organizes work to maintain efficient workflow for the department. Meets acceptable turnaround time and productivity standard for section. Recognizes processing errors/discrepancies or problems and notifies appropriate personnel. Resolves processing errors, discrepancies, inquiries or problems. Verifies patient information using two forms of identification. Demonstrates appropriate interaction with patients according to their specific needs. Provides appropriate information and/or instructions to patient. Job Function: 03. Specimen processing Evaluates specimens and test orders for acceptability and determines rejections according to established guidelines. Labels aliquots samples as required, and obtains/distributes to proper department. Prepares specimens for analysis according to established procedures for each specimen type. Stores specimens properly within the lab for future testing as required. Processes all specimens before leaving at end of shift. Job Function: 04. Computer Usage. Demonstrates proficiency in the use of the hospital and laboratory information systems and their applications to all aspects of the job related functions. (Test requesting, canceling, results retrieval, etc.)Utilizes LIS to review workload, assuring proper collection, completion and reporting of tests ordered. Recognizes and resolves computer problems Job Function: 05. Instruments/ Equipment Operation and Maintenance Operates all instruments/ equipment according to accepted written procedures. Recognizes and identifies instruments/ equipment problems. Resolves instruments/ equipment problems or contacts appropriate technical service. Documents all refrigerator temperatures and corrective action if not within specified range. Maintains a clean, neat and orderly workplace including general laboratory equipment (centrifuges, copiers, printers, fax machines, refrigerators). Job Function: 06. Inventory Management Reviews quantities and expiration dates of all supplies. Monitors inventory of all supplies on a regular basis. Stores supplies received. Maintains a clean and orderly storeroom. Orders supplies as needed. Job Function: 07. Personnel Training Maintains records of competency assessments completed by each staff member. Provides for remedial training as necessary. Oversees training for new employees, students or others as required by the department. Evaluates current phlebotomy skills of new staff. Job Function: 08. Daily Operation Oversight, Assists with compliance with regulatory guidelines including CAP and CLIA. Assists with updating and review of procedure manuals. Coordinates daily workflow. Monitors turnaround time and prioritization of workload and identifies opportunities to enhance TAT standards. Ensures adequate staffing for the area including reassigning staff and monitoring staff schedules. Maintain harmony in the group and distributes workload equitably. Communicates, listens and delegates effectively ensuring that the department goals are met. Acts as a technical resource for personnel and facilitates problem solving. Monitors pending and tracking logs. Participates in the performance evaluation process. Promotes teamwork. Is flexible and open to change. Resolves customer complaints and escalate if needed. Job Function: 09. Safety and Laboratory/ Hospital Policies Practices Standard Precautions. Demonstrates knowledge of and practices department safety procedures in accordance with policies and other regulatory agencies. Works weekdays, weekends and holidays as scheduled. Maintains and is responsible for the accurate recording of hours by utilizing the automated swipe card system. Adheres to policies on vacation and holiday time, inclement weather, lunch and break times, and overtime. Conducts personal business on own time and limits socializing so that the workflow of department is not disrupted. Adheres to laboratory uniform / dress policy. Provides supervisory coverage as designated or when needed in the absence of the supervisor. Attends meetings and participates in continuing education.
